For an astonishing thirty one years in a row, one breed sat at the very top of America's most popular dog list. You already know which one. 🇺🇸

From 1991 all the way through 2021, the Labrador Retriever held the number one spot with the American Kennel Club, outlasting every trend and every rival. No other breed had ever dominated for so long. In 2022 the French Bulldog finally edged ahead, but the Lab's reign remains the longest of the modern era.

Why did it hold on for three decades? Because the Lab fits so many lives at once. Family dog, hunting partner, service animal, gentle friend to children and seniors alike.

A dog that can be all of those things to so many people is a rare and special thing. What first drew you to the breed? 🍫

Long before the Labrador had a name or a breed standard, its ancestors may have been riding fishing boats across the cold North Atlantic. 🌊 The story of the breed reaches back to the small, tough water dogs of Newfoundland, but the deeper origins are genuinely disputed and rather intriguing.

Some historians believe the ancestral dogs traveled with the European fishermen, Portuguese, Basque, English, and others, who worked the rich cod grounds off Newfoundland in the 1500s and 1600s. 🐾 These dogs earned their place hauling lines, retrieving fish and gear from frigid water, and working tirelessly alongside the crews.

There is even a lingering thread in the name itself. Some point to the Portuguese word lavrador, meaning a landholder or worker, though how much that truly connects to the breed is far from settled.

What is not in doubt is that these were working dogs of the sea long before they were gentlemen's retrievers. It is humbling to picture that lineage of salt and cold behind such a gentle family dog. Does that seafaring backstory match the water-mad dog you know?

That thick, wagging tail is not just for knocking coffee cups off the table ☕

A Labrador's tail is often called an otter tail for good reason. It is rounded, muscular, and covered in dense fur, and in the water it works like a rudder while their webbed toes push like paddles. Everything about their build says built for swimming.

Add a water-resistant double coat on top and you have a dog that treats a freezing lake like a warm bath 🌊

The first time mine hit open water, the instinct just switched on with no lessons required. Did your Lab take to swimming right away, or did it need some convincing?

Here is something that surprises a lot of Labrador families: there is not just one type of Labrador, there are essentially two, and once you see the difference you cannot unsee it. 🐾

Over the years the breed slowly split into what people call English and American lines. 📚 The English or bench type, often seen in the show ring, tends to be stockier and heavier set, with a broad head, a thick neck, and a calmer, more laid back temperament. The American or field type was shaped by hunters and field trial handlers, so it usually stands taller and leaner, with a narrower muzzle, longer legs, and a higher energy drive built for a full day of work. Both are purebred Labradors, they simply grew apart as breeders selected for different jobs.

Neither one is better than the other, they are just suited to different lives. 💛 A field line dog may thrive with a very active family, while a bench line dog might settle a little more easily into a calmer household.
