This is what a capacity crisis looks like.

Yesterday, someone told us they had reached out to about 50 places trying to surrender their bunnies after falling on hard times. They did not feel comfortable returning them to the breeder they came from. While many places responded, none had room to help.

Today, we had a shelter in another state reach out asking if we could take a rabbit because placement options were limited.

At the same time, baby rabbits continue to be bred and sold as pets while rescues and shelters struggle to keep up. We also understand why some people are hesitant to surrender back to breeders- from concerns to them being killed (we see some breeders brag about it online)- to being taken outside during the heat they are not accustomed / built for.

Rescues are full. Shelters are stretched. More rabbits need help than there are places able to take them.

If you get a rabbit from a breeder instead of one of the many awesome rescues in Virginia, please go to one that you would feel comfortable returning them to if it doesn’t work out. If you don’t feel comfortable doing that- don’t get a bunny from a breeder!

We are not trying to be harsh here, but the reality is that none of us can keep up with all of the surrender requests we are getting post Easter. We have received surrender requests for multiple bunnies and hoarding situations almost every day for two weeks.

Can compassion be taught?

We hope so.

Because almost every rabbit who ends up in rescue needed someone to slow down, care a little more, ask one more question, or make a better choice. (We know some things happen outside control, and this post isn’t about those situations.)

Rabbits are not starter pets. They are not disposable when life changes, when the novelty wears off, or when care feels harder than expected.

They rely on us completely.

Compassion looks like learning before bringing home a pet. It looks like proper housing, vet care, patience, enrichment, and understanding that rabbits are a commitment.

The reality is that rescues are full because too many animals are treated as temporary.

If we want fewer abandoned and surrendered rabbits, compassion has to show up in actions, not just words.

Adopt thoughtfully. Learn first. Support rescue. Teach kindness.

Our bunnies deserve that. 🐇💜

This is Peanut’s first booster (2nd shot). His annual booster will be required in a year, like all of our other rabbits.

This is Ginger’s second booster. Which means we have had her for over a year.

Hopefully we can find a home for them both soon .
