Adam and Jett did great today! And Amy’s riders did amazing with both of them! Justin took on Jett and for just meeting this horse he handled him perfectly. Isabella rode Adam at the same time and she also had a great go! Both were walk, jog, lope. So proud of my boys 🙂 And at the end even Maggie had a go on Adam. All by herself in the big arena. She has a beautiful rising trot so next time we are going to try hunt. I am excited to share my Morgans with her group! And next week I’m going to share my park horse with Amy!

This was a lot of fun! Thanks to Amy for all the hard work she’s put in with her riders and for having us over!

Our resident goof ball gave his first lesson today! A new young rider excited to learn all things western and horses with maybe a goal for showing later. Jett did great! But he couldn't understand why I was on the ground in the middle 😂 Baby steps...

It’s been a while since I shared about Tommy! I have not been super consistent in May and he always leaves right where we left off. He’s been working hard at hoof handling. As you can see I have a lot of goat assistance 🤣

What’s Morgan Safenet up to?

Today we brought Chase home… for the past 2 years…2 months he’s been a local companion for a sweet Morgan mare named Cass. He has been the perfect match for her and brought great joy to the family who borrowed him. Sadly Cass lost her battle with laminitis last night. Even though Chase was allowed to be there and see everything, sniff her body…he was incredibly distraught by her passing. We decided it was best to bring him home and give him something familiar to ground to instead of guessing at a new match and tearing apart a senior pair bonded here. I think he remembered Chloe and I as he got calm right away. And when he was set free to the big group he remembered some familiar faces and really went right back to herd leader as if he never left.

He’s 22yrs young now and in great shape, although maybe a little whiter on the face (no that is not a star or a blaze.) The Gibson family and Ms Cass did a great job taking care of him this whole time. We can’t thank them enough.

Horses may not have human emotions but they do feel, grieve and remember.

Welcome home Chase!

Behind the glass of a broken system… a broken industry.

Broken because money comes before welfare. Why do we continually look for one to blame?

Today a 2yr old Saddlebred gelding got a second chance thanks to a stranger in VT willing to take a risk. It’s not for everyone…this broker game…but the right people find the right horse in need and I guess that is what matters most.

Watching this baby in a busy pen was hard. It wasn’t that the lot was mean or cruel…it’s just the way. The way you have to handle and push through so many horses. It was busy and he was clearly lost…but also clearly started.

There are clues that lead to where unpapered horses come from or have been last at least. This young boy was clearly just out of a show barn. Once a well thought out number in a master plan and shown love…quickly turned into a number and “not enough”.

The pressure imposed in this day and time in the industry in ANY breed, is hard. And it is hard for MANY to match up so quickly. It does NOT mean they are not worthy if you are willing to put time and patience into growth. Those owners and trainers are hard to find these days…if we are being completely honest. I do think the “old timers” of my day are rolling in their graves right now. Back then it was worth the wait to watch a young horse progress through the stages of training and not be pushed hard. Those days seem lost and the horses are paying the price.

No matter the breed.

This boy who has gone from a number…a scared nobody…to a very much loved Casper…who will hopefully dna but I don’t think that is most important to his new mom…who is miles away. This is what it should be about. This was refreshing. This was rewarding. To know one could be funneled out of a system of unwanted to a loving home. This matters.

But until we all decide to look closer at what we are doing and how we are doing it…when money no longer continues to replace welfare and wellbeing…I’m not sure change will happen.

And I don’t blame the broker…not at all. They are just a system that will continue to match demand of all the unwanted. And after the conversation I overheard today in the office…I think it’s just as hard on them too. And in some ways they have to shut it off. Work it as a business. More on that another day.

For tonight… 7234…bay saddlebred…now Casper…is safe in the barn. Something I feel he is familiar with…something he once new…preparing to make a journey to his new mom in VT who can’t wait to meet him!

Happy to be part of this…
