Change.
Summer turns to Fall, Fall to Winter, Winter to Spring.

All things change.

I took this photo today as I prepared to welcome a new group of dog guardians into our community.

I took this photo today after an emotional, but love filled meeting this afternoon.

Change is desperately needed in this world.

We NEED to recognize the needs of others. Those with 2 legs, and those with 4 legs.

Whose needs are more important? Mine, my neighbor’s, your dog, my dog? Who decides?

When we see beyond ourselves, and open up to seeing the needs of others matter, we can accept the changes that need to happen.

We can see past the inconvenience of meeting the needs of another being, and make that sacrifice.

We can see beyond our desire to take our dog to places that are scary or stressful, and respect the needs of that dog.

We can admit that using pain, force and fear to make a dog more compliant, or easy to handle, is not respecting the sentient being in front of us - and changing to more humane ways is hard for some.

Today, I am choosing to see that glimmer of light. I want to think there are others willing to make changes in our world and in our community that will make us better stewards of the innocent lives we bring into our homes.

We would never choose to put electricity into our dog's necks for any reason , but the dangers of invisible fences are far more than the companies who sell them advertise.

Sometime we really need to ask ourselves: Does the dog really need this, or is this something we just want? Things like teaching a skill that makes our dog uncomfortable, taking a dog to an outdoor cafe, concert, fireworks, or even a dog park. Do you always think about your dog’s well being prior to making a decision?

Have you or do you leave any unusual instructions for your pet sitter?

One of mine is: Keno must be in his crate or behind a barrier when other dogs go outside. He can be let out after them, but cannot go through a doorway with another dog.

Another used to be: Cheyenne needs a handful of shredded cheese sprinkled on her food.
