First horse to test out the new scale at the clinic! How much do you think he weighs? Answer will be posted on Monday!

Monday 1/12/26 Update: The moment you've all been waiting for.... This horse's weight on the scale was 1287 lbs! His most recent weight tape reading was 1100lbs. The weight tape is a good guideline to monitor change but if you want to know the exact number, a scale is the best option!

Happy ! **graphic photo warning**

This mare sustained a wound to the side of her head from unknown trauma that transected several small veins and an artery. She was profusely bleeding and the owner and caretakers did a great job holding pressure on the wound until we could arrive.

The wound had to be enlarged to be able to visualize the vessels and they were ligated with absorbable suture prior to closing the defect in the skin. She was placed on antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication. Her head was then bandaged and she was kept separated from her friends to keep her quiet while healing.

The sutures were removed about 2 weeks after her initial injury. Her wound healed extremely well aside from a mild deviation in her muzzle from nerve damage. She does not seem to phased by the events that occurred a few weeks ago or by the stress she put her owner through!

At South Mountian Equine we spend our days focused on caring for horses and supporting the people who love them. We are thankful and blessed for this opportunity. The holidays provide us all a time to reconnect as teammates, celebrate our wins, and enjoy time with our families.

We wish you, your family and your equine friends a Merry Christmas. May your day be filled with love and joy.

As the veterinarian we try to come up with the best treatment plan possible to help our patients heal appropriately but it is up to the owner to execute the plan and do the needed nursing care. This mare was diagnosed with a corneal abscess on November 3, 2025. The pictures follow the progress of her healing until her recheck on December 18, 2025. This owner was a rock star, medicating her eye every few hours throughout the day and the mare was an angel for treatment. The owner’s dedication clearly shows with the amazing results they achieved. Having these wonderful clients and patients makes our job truly rewarding.

Corneal abscesses occur when ulcers or cuts to the cornea allow infectious agents like bacteria and fungi to enter the middle layer (stroma). The epithelium heals over the infectious agents trapping them along with white blood cells forming the abscess. These infections are extremely painful with tearing, squinting, redness and swelling often being presenting signs. The inside of the eye also becomes inflamed, and the horse is at risk of losing its vision or even its eye. Intense treatment is necessary with frequent application of topical medications every 1-2 hours throughout the day. Even with dedicated medical management, surgery by an ophthalmologist may be necessary to remove the infected tissue or enucleation may be the end result.
