An update on Starr, the abandoned German Shepherd found with her muzzle taped shut near Brewster, NY: She is doing wonderfully at our sister hospital, and we couldn't be happier with her progress! Go Starr!

⭐ LET STARR SHINE: An Update on Starr ⭐

Many of you have seen the heartbreaking story of the young German Shepherd found near Starr Ridge Road in Southeast, New York, with her muzzle tightly wrapped in electrical tape.

Today, we can introduce you to her as Starr. ❤️

Starr was found by a Good Samaritan who removed the tape and immediately brought her to Brewster Veterinary Hospital for medical care.
When Starr arrived, she had significant swelling and injuries to her muzzle and mouth, including broken teeth and damage to the tissue surrounding her mouth. She also had abrasions around her collar area and scarring on her ear.
Our veterinary team performed a sedated examination, cleaned and treated her wounds, and began managing her immediate medical needs. Starr is now being given time for the swelling to subside before the next stage of her treatment. She is expected to require additional dental care, including extractions, as well as reconstructive surgery.

And yet, through everything Starr has experienced, what has stood out most to those caring for her is her incredibly sweet and trusting personality. She continues to seek affection, lean into the people caring for her and remind us just how resilient animals can be.

We are working closely with the Putnam County SPCA, whose Law Enforcement Division continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding Starr's case. To protect the integrity of that investigation, we will not speculate or provide additional details regarding the circumstances in which she was found.
Right now, our focus is where it belongs: on Starr and her recovery.

We are also incredibly grateful to Hill's Pet Nutrition, which has generously stepped forward to provide Starr's food during her recovery.

As Starr prepares for the medical care still ahead, we have established the Let Starr Shine campaign to help offset the costs of her treatment, dental care, reconstructive surgery and continued recovery.

⭐ LET STARR SHINE ⭐
If you would like to be part of Starr's journey, you can donate through the link below. If you aren't able to donate, simply sharing her story can make a difference.

We are incredibly thankful to the Good Samaritan who stopped to help Starr, the Putnam County SPCA, everyone involved in her care, Hill's Pet Nutrition, and the countless members of our community who have reached out asking how they can help.

Starr's story began under heartbreaking circumstances.
Together, we can help make sure that's not where her story ends.

⭐ Let's help Starr heal. Let's help Starr shine. ⭐

💬Thank you for your wonderful review, Skylar! Transparency, swift care, and peace of mind are always our top priorities, especially during late-night emergencies.

"Had a GDV scare tonight with our pitbull/great dane mix, Belle. Once we saw the signs we immediately took her in, they were quick, explained everything they were doing, and were super transparent about the prices beforehand. They confirmed she did not have GDV (THANK GOD). We feel so relieved and couldn’t be more grateful for the care she received tonight. ❤️ Thanks Guardian!"

We will never forget. 🇺🇸

Seventeen minutes. On September 11, 2001, that was the length of time from when American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center, at 8:46 a.m., to when United Airlines Flight 175 entered the right-hand side of millions of TV screens, at 9:03 a.m., and plowed into the South Tower at nearly 600 miles an hour.

For most Americans who can recall that morning, the attack didn’t begin at 8:46. The confusion did.

Many bystanders initially took the first plane crash to be an accident. Broadcasters speculated whether the collision was caused by a malfunction in a small plane, while the Port Authority assured those in the South Tower there was no need to evacuate.

In an essay for National Geographic, author and historian Garrett M. Graff argues that today, with some 40 percent of the country too young to remember the events of 9/11, the memory of that morning is at risk of being lost. In revisiting those surreal 17 minutes, he writes, “we can glimpse one America ending and a new one beginning.”

Pets Alive would like to share that several of our longtime Board members have stepped down from their positions. We are incredibly grateful for the time, dedication, guidance, and support they have given to Pets Alive and the animals who depend on us. We thank them for being part of our journey and wish them all the very best in their next chapters.
And now, we are thrilled to introduce Dan Zelem as the new President and Chairman of the Pets Alive Board of Directors! 🎉
Dan is no stranger to Pets Alive. He has been a longtime volunteer, generous supporter, and passionate advocate for our organization and the animals in our care. His deep understanding of Pets Alive and his commitment to our mission make him an exciting addition to this next chapter of leadership.
As we move forward, we are focused on building a stronger, more engaged Board, expanding our community of supporters, and creating an even brighter future for Pets Alive. There is important work ahead, and we are excited about the possibilities!
Most importantly, our mission remains the same: to save lives, keep people and pets together, and create a more humane community. 🐶🐱
Thank you to everyone who has stood beside Pets Alive through every chapter. We are looking forward to writing the next one together.
