A friendly reminder to all who have been working hard to limit grass for their easy keepers and founder-prone horses - don't let the grass fool you!

As the grass gets stressed by warm days and cool nights, it starts to look a little more harmless than the lush grass of late spring. It is understandable why some may think it is safe to free your gelding of his grazing muzzle that he has worn patiently all spring and summer, or turn your mare onto pasture that she has been eyeing for months from her dry lot.

But, the stressed out grass can be every bit as high in sugar (sometimes higher) as the lush grass we see in spring. This is because, as the temperatures begin to cool down at night, the grass starts to store sugars at the base of the blade instead of using up the sugar to grow. The result is short grass that is packed with sugar - a big risk for horses that are prone to weight gain and laminitis.

Watch for SportHorse Massage at this years Dane/Columbia County 4-H Tack Sale. Will be displaying at a table as well as donating a massage for the Silent Auction. The event will be Feb. 25, 2017 at the Arlington Public events building, N695 Hopkins Road, Arlington, WI from 9AM to 2PM. Hope to see you there!

This week marks the 10th Anniversary of SportHorse Massage. If I were to thank everyone that had a part in this i think I would crash Facebook. However, I would be remiss if I didn't mention two special individuals. Megan McIsaac for taking a chance on a man that stumbled into her barn unannouced and to my wonderful wife for putting up with this crazy adventure. Here's hoping we make it for 10 more. Thanks everyone!
