“If you knew this, you may not need a dog trainer.”

That might upset a few dog trainers. 👀

But one of the most useful things you can learn is how your dog learns from pressure—and, more importantly, the release of it.

It’s called escape learning and negative reinforcement.

➕Leash pressure → dog finds the behavior → ➖pressure disappears.

That release matters.

Instead of simply pulling your dog into position, we can teach the dog that their own behavior turns the pressure off. Over time, the leash becomes less about restraint and more about communication.

Does that mean negative reinforcement is the answer to every training problem? Absolutely not.

Food matters. Play matters. Markers matter. Prevention matters. Corrections can matter. And understanding the individual dog matters.

This is one small piece of a much bigger training system.

You don’t have to agree with every training method to understand how it works. So let’s have the conversation:

We’re officially one month out from Fowler K9 Academy’s 6th Annual Working Dogs of America Trial Weekend in Middleton, Idaho — and all competitor spots are filled.

The click isn’t the reward. It tells the dog what’s coming next. 🎯

Markers can communicate different things: reinforcement, punishment, the beginning of a behavior, or the end of one.

A marker can be anything the dog hears, sees, or feels—such as a clicker, a verbal tone, a hand signal, or tactile pressure.

In this video, we’re simply building meaning into the clicker through a game of catching kibble.

Then we start using that marker to create a predictable sequence:

MARKER → MOVEMENT → REWARD

Click → handler moves to provide reinforcement → food is tossed.

In this case, the goal is to teach the dog that the marker identifies that reinforcement is coming.

Simple communication now creates clearer, more complex behaviors later.

Not all remote collars are created equal—even when the features look the same.

In this video, I compare a low-cost remote collar a client purchased on Amazon with an E-Collar Technologies Mini Educator.

Both collars offer adjustable stimulation, but the important difference showed up at the lowest possible setting.

With the cheaper collar, the dog showed an immediate adverse reaction—even at level 1 out of 100. There was nowhere lower to go.

With the Mini Educator, the lowest level produced no visible reaction from the dog.

Why does that matter?

If I want to use low-level stimulation as reinforcement within training, I need enough range and consistency to work below the point where the dog becomes concerned, nervous, or startled. Then, when an aversive consequence is appropriate, I still have the ability to increase the level intentionally.

The goal isn’t to say aversives should never be used. The goal is to have enough control over the tool to decide when stimulation functions as information/reinforcement and when it functions as an aversive consequence.

A remote collar having 100 levels doesn’t necessarily mean it gives you 100 useful levels.

Quality matters. Consistency matters. And understanding how the dog experiences the tool matters most.
