Loose leash walking and formal heeling are NOT the same thing… and most dog owners confuse the two.

Loose leash walking is about freedom with boundaries.
The dog can explore, sniff, and move naturally — as long as they aren’t dragging you down the street.

Formal heeling is precision obedience.
Position matters. Engagement matters. Every step, turn, sit, and pace change is intentional.

Both have value. Both serve different purposes.
The problem is most people try to train one while expecting the results of the other.

Blue stepped onto the field for his PD2 (Police Dog 2) attempt — a demanding working dog title designed to test advanced obedience, control, protection work, and the overall capability of a police-service-style dog.

These routines are built to push both dog and handler under pressure with advanced exercises that test precision, courage, reliability, and teamwork. Titles like this are meant to identify dogs capable of real working service and to preserve the standard for strong working dogs.

Unfortunately, we came up short on the pass due to a few handler errors, but Blue performed valiantly throughout the routine and proved exactly why we’re proud of him. Off-leash control, advanced recalls, obstacle work, and pressure obedience are not easy tasks, and Blue showed heart every step of the way.

Not every trial ends with a title, but every honest test teaches you something. We’ll tighten up the details, keep training, and come back stronger.

“How do you actually train dogs?”

Moose is currently in our Board & Train program, and in this session we’re demonstrating one of the foundational ways we teach behaviors: markers and lures.

The marker tells the dog exactly what behavior earned reinforcement. The lure helps guide the dog into the correct position while they begin understanding the game. Over time, the dog learns the behavior, the lure fades, and communication becomes clearer and clearer.

One thing we do differently at Fowler K9 Academy is use our Board & Train dogs to help educate our private lesson clients. Sometimes it’s easier to see the process before trying to apply it to your own dog.

So while Moose is learning, our private lesson clients are learning too. They get to watch timing, mechanics, reward placement, and how small details create cleaner communication with the dog.

Dog training isn’t magic. It’s clear communication, repetition, timing, and understanding the dog in front of you.

FedEx officially earned his Family Obedience title through the Working Dogs of America.

No toys.
No food.
No training collar.

Just obedience.

After only 3 months with us following his import from Europe, FedEx demonstrated heeling, recalls, stays, vehicle loading, and neutrality around distractions under an independent evaluation.
