I LOVE helping people make life better with their canine companions.

And Iโ€™m always learning to bring the most effective training approaches to my clients.

๐ŸŽ“ Iโ€™m a certified pet dog trainer and keep my certification current through continuing education.

๐ŸŽฏ Since 2024, Iโ€™ve also been a TAGteach Level 1 certified teacher. TAGteach helps me break training homework into bite-sized steps so you AND your dog can experience success and positive reinforcement.

And yes โ€” sometimes the behavior that needs changing is ours! ๐Ÿ˜‰

I offer private, personalized training and small group classes, plus occasional sessions and presentations at:

๐Ÿ“– Public libraries
๐Ÿ• A Pet Expo
๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ A Pride event
๐Ÿ  A Humane Society event
๐ŸŒณ Local parks

And now Iโ€™m trying something completely newโ€ฆ

๐Ÿท๐Ÿ• A Taste & Train at a local winery!

Because who says dog training canโ€™t be fun, social, and a little different? ๐Ÿ˜‰

Iโ€™m always looking for creative ways to bring dog training to the community.

We use Positive Reinforcement โ€” rewarding the behaviors we want to see more of and redirecting the ones we donโ€™t.

๐Ÿšซ No yelling, hitting, choke/prong/shock collars, or punishment-based methods.

Instead, weโ€™ll use treats, toys, praise, and optional clicker training to build reliable skills and a strong relationship with your dog.

๐Ÿพ Puppies and adult dogs welcome! Training can begin as early as 8 weeks with age-appropriate vaccines. All dogs remain safely on leash.

This group course focuses on foundational obedience, not individualized behavior modification.

Dogs with fear, aggression, resource guarding, or significant reactivity may be better suited for private training. (We do that, too!}

Dogs may not speak our language, but their body language says a lot.

Learning to recognize your dog's communication signals can prevent misunderstandings, improve safety, and strengthen your bond with your canine companion.

๐Ÿ˜จ ๐™๐™š๐™–๐™ง: Tail tucked, ears back, crouched posture, avoiding eye contact, lip licking, or yawning.

๐Ÿ˜Š ๐™๐™ง๐™ž๐™š๐™ฃ๐™™๐™ก๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™š๐™จ๐™จ: Loose, wiggly body, soft eyes, relaxed ears, gentle tail wags, and playful bows.

โš ๏ธ ๐˜ผ๐™œ๐™œ๐™ง๐™š๐™จ๐™จ๐™ž๐™ค๐™ฃ: Stiff posture, hard stare, raised hackles, tight mouth, growling, barking, or lunging.

๐Ÿฆด ๐™๐™š๐™จ๐™ค๐™ช๐™ง๐™˜๐™š ๐™‚๐™ช๐™–๐™ง๐™™๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ: Freezing, hovering over food or toys, tense body, hard stare, growling, or a tight jaw.

๐ŸŒฟ ๐˜พ๐™–๐™ก๐™ข๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ ๐™Ž๐™ž๐™œ๐™ฃ๐™–๐™ก๐™จ: Turning away, yawning, sniffing the ground, licking lips, blinking, moving slowly, lifting a paw, or shaking off.

Recognizing these signals helps you respond appropriately by lowering your energy, softening your tone, or giving your dog space.

Understanding body language is an essential part of successful dog training!

Recently, Bentley, a beautiful golden retriever, took a huge step forward using counter conditioning and systematic desensitization.

Counter conditioning works by pairing something your dog finds scary with something they absolutely love.

The key is using a special, high-value treat that's only given during these training exercises. โœจ

๐Ÿšด For Bentley, bikes were the trigger.

We started with a bike at a comfortable distance and kept the experience positive.

The moment Bentley noticed the bike, he earned delicious chicken.๐Ÿ— When the bike was out of sight, the chicken stopped.

Before long, Bentley began learning that seeing a bike meant good things were about to happen! ๐Ÿ˜

We also used systematic desensitization by gradually decreasing the distance between Bentley and the bike.

We started about 10 feet away and slowly worked our way to around 5 feet, making sure he stayed relaxed and confident the entire time.

The result? Bentley stayed happy, engaged, and successful throughout the session while building both confidence and obedience.

โฌ‡๏ธ In this video below, see how well Bently did when a bike passed nearby!

The same approach can be used for many fears, including noises.

Start at a low intensity, pair the trigger with something your dog loves, and gradually increase the challenge as your dog is ready.

Bradley came to me with a hyper border collie named Leo. Because he started training so young, we were able to channel his puppy's energy into commands and learning instead of destruction.

He loved how Leo learned to respond so well to sit, down and target. Target was one his favorites. ๐Ÿ˜

Target is getting your dog to touch your hand on command. You can move your dog around with the target command.

๐˜พ๐™๐™š๐™˜๐™  ๐™ค๐™ช๐™ฉ ๐™ฉ๐™๐™ž๐™จ ๐™จ๐™๐™ค๐™ง๐™ฉ ๐™ซ๐™ž๐™™๐™š๐™ค ๐™—๐™š๐™ก๐™ค๐™ฌ where I talk about how to do Target with your dog to be really effective! โฌ‡๏ธ

Target is a very versatile command. It can even be used in place of other commands, such as come.

Bradley used Target with Leo to do the following:
โ€ข Move his dog into an exact position instead of having to grab his collar
โ€ข Teach Leo to follow him during leash walks
โ€ข To redirect Leo off of smells and get his attention

Our dog training was very fun, and both Bradley and Leo enjoyed the positive reinforcement training experience.

Target is a favorite for many of my clients in our Elementary Obedience group course.

The funny thing? During training, Sammy came beautifully every time.

So what was going on?

This is a common struggle. We expect our dogs to respond perfectly, but pressured moments arenโ€™t the best time to expect a behavior that hasnโ€™t been practiced in real life.

Turn those moments into training opportunities.

For Sammy, we retrained his recall around distractions using a lure and running prompt. His owner also started carrying treats to practice during everyday moments.

I understand this personally. As a single mom, I had plenty of pressured moments when my daughter was young! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

When I learned to pause, breathe, and focus on creating success instead of reacting, we were both happier.

Dog training, like raising children, takes time and effort. But itโ€™s totally worth it! โค๏ธ

Remember the excitement you felt when you first brought your dog home?

The walks. The hikes. The backyard adventures. The cuddles. The silly moments. ๐Ÿ˜

Somewhere along the way, training can start to feel less like fun and more like frustration.

Your dog jumps. You get tense.
Your dog pulls. You get frustrated.
You call your dogโ€ฆ and they donโ€™t come. ๐Ÿ˜ฉ

And suddenly, youโ€™re in a power struggle neither of you wanted.

But what if you changed the game โ€” literally?

Instead of focusing on the behavior that frustrates you, focus on the behavior you want to see more of.

๐Ÿพ Four paws on the floor? Make it a game.
๐Ÿพ Loose leash? Celebrate it!
๐Ÿพ Coming when called? Make yourself more exciting than whatever your dog was doing.
๐Ÿพ Great behavior? Add treats, praise, play, or even toss the treat to make the reward more fun.

Your dog should want to participate in training, not feel like theyโ€™re constantly being corrected.

And YOU should be having fun, too.
