This is Stuart. 🎃🐈‍⬛

Stuart has always been into Halloween.

His first costume was “terrifying veterinary emergency.”

He came to us as a tiny stray kitten with severe infections in both eyes. His right eye was completely out of its socket, and we really didn’t know if we’d be able to save it.

A few weeks of treatment and a lot of TLC from our team later, we did.

Stuart kept his eye. He kept his vision. And because apparently successful veterinary treatment now includes a lifetime housing contract, he moved upstairs.

These days he spends his time climbing cat towers, hanging out with his buddy Popeye, and occasionally joining us for lunch whether he was invited or not.

And now he’s getting ready for Halloween. 🎃

This year Stuart is going as something truly frightening:

A cat who owns the place. 👻

Twenty-five years ago, JVAH was a much smaller hospital when September 11th happened. It hit our community hard, and it hit our little hospital personally. One of our staff members lost her daughter that morning. Many of the families whose pets we cared for lost someone too.

In the days that followed, members of our team, myself included, joined veterinarians, veterinary technicians and assistants who came from near and far to care for the search and rescue dogs working at Ground Zero. We came for the dogs. Others came to work the pile. Everybody came to help.

I wrote about this only once before, in 2016, the year the last surviving Ground Zero search dog died. The dogs are all gone now. We knew someday they would be. Dogs simply don’t get enough years.

The human story has no such ending. Some are still living with the loss of someone who never came home. Others are living with what they breathed, what they were exposed to, and what followed them home. Some became sick. Some died. Others live with those consequences today. We knew when the last search dog was gone. We don’t know when the last person affected by September 11th will be.

For an entire generation, September 11th is history. Thankfully, for me and for our hospital, there are people here today who know it only that way. For many others, it remains someone’s daughter, someone’s friend, a dog they once worked beside, or an illness they’re living with today.

Twenty-five years later, the remembering isn’t over.

20 years old.
She walks into the animal hospital on a leash.
Takes a look around.
Checks out the neighborhood.
Generally acts like she owns the place.

Mickey stopped by today for a thyroid recheck and gave us a brief lesson in how to age properly.

Carry on, Mickey. 🐾

Milo came in for a dental and to remove some lumps and bumps.
He left as…this.
Lion? Sunflower? Pumpkin spice something?
It has ears, which frankly raises more questions than it answers.
Your call. What is Milo supposed to be?

JUST CHILL. ❄️

The safest place for your pet over the next few days is somewhere cool.

🌅 Walk early.
🌙 Walk late.
💧 Keep the water bowl full.
🎾 Save the adventures for next week.

🚨 Watch for heavy panting, bright red gums, weakness, vomiting, or collapse. These are signs of heatstroke and require immediate veterinary care.

Stay cool. Stay safe. We’ll be here if you need us. ❤️🐾

Here at JVAH, our veterinary and kennel assistants are the people who keep this place running.

They clean ears. They clean cages. They mop floors before most of Queens has had breakfast. They hold nervous pets steady. They comfort anxious owners. They restock supplies, run lab work, help restrain patients, set up rooms, walk dogs, clean up accidents, and somehow keep the doctors from wandering into traffic. 🐶🐱🩺🧹

Veterinary Assistant Week gives us a chance to point out something we already know around here.

National Puppy Day 2026 🐶

We’ve seen a lot of puppies walk through this door. Not one of them has ever failed to make us smile.

There’s a moment that happens in our exam room, every single time. A new puppy comes in, wiggly and wide-eyed, and for just a second, everyone in the room forgets what they were doing.

Today we’re celebrating them, and the people who love them so much they bring them to us.

Drop a photo of your pup in the comments. We’d love to see the faces that make our days.

💛 Big thanks to Jackie for putting together this year’s montage, scroll down and enjoy.

Jenny and Jamie came in looking like they had brunch reservations after this.

Valentine’s Day is about love.
These two clearly love being admired.
