We don’t do much boarding, but I can tell you this is 100% true. The costs that no one see are huge! Taking good care of horses costs a lot more than people think.

What Does Your Monthly Board Actually Pay For?

“I recently saw a comment in a local horse group suggesting that boarding rates are far higher than the actual cost of caring for a horse. From the outside looking in, it can be easy to assume that board simply covers hay, feed, bedding, and basic daily care. In reality, operating a safe, well-maintained equine facility involves many additional expenses.

Along with the direct care of each horse, monthly board helps cover:

• Property rent or mortgage
• Business and liability insurance
• Electricity and utilities
• Facility, arena, and equipment maintenance
• Fuel for the equipment used around the farm
• Manure removal
• Repairs and replacement of items damaged through normal wear and tear
• Water and feed buckets, hoses, pitchforks, cross-ties, and automatic-waterer parts
• Cleaning supplies and everyday necessities for shared areas
• Payroll for the dependable people who help provide daily care
•Truck & Trailer Maintenence

The list is nearly endless—and many of these expenses continue to rise.

Board is not simply payment for a stall and a few bales of hay. It supports the people, equipment, facilities, and behind-the-scenes work required to provide consistent, professional care while maintaining the safe and comfortable amenities horse owners expect.

There is an enormous amount of time, responsibility, and expense involved in properly caring for horses and operating a quality facility. Boarding rates reflect the true cost of providing that level of care—not just the items that are easiest to see.”

💙 Rip showing us again why we love his mind. 💙

Sally, an adult amateur, hopped on Rip and had such a nice ride!

At only four years old, Rip continues to impress us with how willing, sensible, and adaptable he is with different riders. He has a naturally balanced way of going, comfortable gaits, and genuinely tries to understand what his rider is asking without making things complicated.

Rip is still a young horse with plenty of developing ahead of him, but that’s part of what makes him such an exciting prospect. He has the temperament and natural ability to be a really lovely partner for someone who wants to continue bringing a young horse along.

And his personality? Sweet, curious, goofy, and always interested in what his people are doing. 🥰

We think Rip has a very bright future ahead of him. 💙

💙 We LOVE getting updates like this! 💙

About 2½ years ago, we sold Tango to Breanna for her daughter, Eva—but their story actually started before that.

Eva borrowed Tango for a clinic and completely fell in love with him. And Tango fell in love right back. Of all the horses we’ve watched find their people, Tango chose Eva about as clearly as a horse possibly could. There was just something special between them from the beginning. ❤️

Since then, Eva and their trainer, Tara, have continued developing and showing Tango—and we recently received another update that made us incredibly proud.

Tara showed Tango at Second Level for the first time and scored an amazing 67%! 🎉

Seeing him progressing through the levels is wonderful, but seeing him thriving with the family he was meant to find is even better.

This is why we do what we do at Legacy Sport Horses. The sale is exciting, but watching one of our horses years later—loved, developing, succeeding, and still with their person—is the part that means the most.

Congratulations to Eva, Tara, Breanna, and Tango! We are so proud of all of you and can’t wait to see where this partnership goes next. 💙🐴

🐴 Looking for a Horse-Experienced Crew Member — Work Off Your Board!
We may have the perfect opportunity for someone who would love to keep their horse at Legacy Sport Horses while working off their board.

We’re looking for a reliable, experienced horse person to join our barn crew in exchange for board. You’ll get to keep your own horse here and enjoy all of the amenities our facility has to offer—including:

✨ Heated indoor arena
✨ Regulation-size outdoor dressage arena
✨ Round pen
✨ Beautiful grass pastures that are carefully managed and rotated
✨ Luxury observation room with kitchen and bathroom
✨ Laundry
✨ Wash rack with on-demand hot water
✨ And, most importantly, excellent, attentive care for the horses

There’s also something pretty special about working where your horse lives: you have firsthand knowledge of exactly how your horse is being cared for every day.
We take a lot of pride in our barn, our horses, and the standard of care we provide. We’re hoping to find someone who feels the same way—dependable, hardworking, comfortable handling horses, and interested in becoming part of a positive barn environment.

If you have horse experience, need a great place to board, and would love the opportunity to trade your time and skills for board at a beautiful facility, we’d love to hear from you.

✨ A little reminder that Tulip isn’t just versatile—she’s a proven dressage horse, too. ✨

Tulip earned a 62.8% at Second Level Test 2, and we wanted to reshare her test for anyone who may have missed it.

Since this ride, she has continued schooling toward Third Level and is working on her flying changes. Add in the fact that she’s an absolute dream on the trails and recently tackled her first jump schooling like a champ, and she really is a wonderfully versatile mare.

Tulip would be such a fun partner for someone who wants to train, compete, trail ride, and build a real relationship with their horse. She loves having her person and has so much to offer the right rider. 💙

We also have a recent passed PPE on file available for serious buyers.

✨ Meet Rip ✨

Rip is a 4-year-old, 15.2hh Turbo Friesian gelding who is double registered, and we are really enjoying watching this young horse develop.

He has a naturally floaty trot, an incredibly smooth canter, and lovely balance for his age. But as pretty as he is to watch, his mind and personality may be our favorite things about him. Rip is curious, goofy, willing, and genuinely tries to figure out what his rider is asking.

He’s been ridden by both professionals and adult amateurs and has also been getting plenty of experience outside the arena. He’s a good boy on the trails, and when his young-horse nerves occasionally show up, he listens to his rider, thinks his way through the situation, and recovers beautifully. That quality means a lot to us.

Rip has the movement and natural ability to be an exciting dressage prospect, while his good mind and versatility make him appealing for someone who wants a horse to enjoy beyond the show ring, too.

Double registered. Beautiful movement. Great brain. And enough goofy personality to keep you laughing. 💙

✨ PRICE REDUCTION — TULIP ✨

Sometimes a really special horse simply hasn’t found her person yet.

We’ve reduced Tulip’s price by $2,000 in hopes of getting her in front of the rider who has been looking for exactly what she offers.

Tulip is confirmed and successfully shown at Second Level, with the talent and training to continue progressing. She is light, responsive, incredibly comfortable to sit, and the lateral work comes naturally to her. She loves having a relationship with her rider and would be an incredible partner for someone who wants to continue developing and be competitive in the dressage ring.

And she isn’t just a dressage horse.

Tulip is an absolute dream on the trails—brave, sensible, and genuinely enjoyable to take outside the arena. She’s the kind of horse you can work toward serious goals with one day and head out for a relaxing trail ride the next.

Even better, we have a recent passed PPE on file that we’re happy to share with serious buyers.

There is nothing “wrong” with Tulip and nothing prompting this reduction other than our desire to find the right person for a mare we think is incredibly special. Sometimes the right horse and the right rider just haven't found each other yet. 💙

💙 This is what we mean when we say Ripley is uncomplicated. 💙

Sally is an adult amateur, and Ripley gave her such a nice, relaxed ride.

At only four years old, he has the kind of quiet, patient temperament that is so difficult to teach. He’s responsive without being overly forward, forgiving of his rider, and genuinely seems to want to do the right thing.

Ripley isn’t a finished dressage horse—and we aren’t pretending he is. He has a solid walk, trot, and canter and plenty of opportunity to continue developing in whatever direction his next person chooses. But if your priority is finding a safe, sweet young horse you can actually relax and have fun riding, he already has the qualities that matter most.

He’s also wonderful on the trails, has been ridden English and Western, and is just as easy to have around the barn.

💙 This might tell you more about Ripley than a perfect ride ever could.

When we first approached this puddle, Ripley was afraid of it. And honestly, that’s okay—especially for a four-year-old horse.

What matters to us is what happens next.

We gave him a little time to understand what we were asking, and this video is the result: Ripley walking quietly through the same puddle on a loose rein, relaxed and confident.

That’s one of the things we love most about him. He doesn’t have to already know every answer. He listens, thinks, trusts his rider, and figures things out without turning a question into a big event.

Ripley is safe, sweet, uncomplicated, wonderful on the trails, and has been ridden both English and Western. At just four years old, he has the kind of brain we believe you can build just about anything on.

You can teach a horse a lot of things. A mind like this is much harder to teach. 💙

✨ Apparently Tulip can add jumping to her résumé! ✨

Callie took Tulip through her very first jump schooling, and she did great! She approached the whole experience exactly the way we’ve come to expect from her—curious, willing, and ready to figure out whatever we asked.

Tulip has successfully shown through Second Level and is continuing toward Third, but we love giving our horses opportunities to try things outside their normal job. She continues to show us that she’s not just a talented dressage horse—she’s a versatile, brave mare who genuinely enjoys having a person and doing things together.

Dressage one day, trails the next, and apparently now we can add jumping to the list. 💙
