The spooky story of my truly branching green star polyp colony.... On a wiltingly hot day in Miami over a year ago I drove to the airport and picked up a few boxes of corals that I had imported from Indonesia. One of these corals was a big combo rock full of of zoanthids, small leather corals, and a...

We're starting to get into the cooler time of year when shipping becomes easier and the hot summer temps go away. Perfect time to add some new beauties to your reef tank!

Oh man check out these hot new corals!! 😍

A year ago, I had no idea anything like this existed. I had no idea that mushroom mycelium cover forest floors, they create this superhighway between trees that protects tree roots, they share nutrients/water with trees, the trees use that highway to share information with one another, that the millions of tons of mushroom spores that are released into the air create climate and rain. They are also some of the best tasting mushrooms I’ve eaten in my life that are full of anti-cancer, anti-aging, adaptogenic qualities that make our bodies better at dealing with environmental stress. They are truly amazing creatures, as are our coral reefs.

But if we don’t have any forests they can’t do their job. If we don’t begin paying attention to the planet and who we vote for, who we buy from, our own consumer habits, it will all go away. Our planet will change in fundamental ways that will make life as we know it unsustainable.

Climate change is real. There’s an idiot trying to destroy parts of the Big Bend National park right now to put a border wall in an area that has 1000 foot cliffs. Climate change is real.

Oh and guess what? I’m STILL here bi***es, I’m still growing corals and selling corals. Except now I’ve spent a year in the AMAZING forests of NY and PA. I have learned so much that I had no idea about and I’ve learned that our super biodiverse ecosystems like coral reefs, rainforests, hemlock forests, share the same thing in common; they need US. They need us to wake up and make real changes. They need all of us to give a damn.

Our planet will keep going if we destroy everything, the human race may cease to exist but the planet will keep going, species that survived our age of stupidity will flourish again and new species will come into existence. Or we could just give a damn now and enjoy the paradise that is our planet. Right now, every day our planet and its creatures are co-existing in a harmony that benefits the other. Humans should be caretakers, not exploiters. This is our home, our only one.

Mars has almost no atmosphere, it has massive wind storms that rage for over a year, it has no oceans, no lakes, no rivers, no trees, no life. That’s our closest “habitable planet”. We have only ONE Earth, one home, one place full of so much biodiversity that we haven’t even discovered most of it. And we’re killing it; simply because we need more stuff, we need more money, we need more gadgets, and AI needs to do everything for us that’s why we need to cut everything down to build more AI data centers.

Are you happy with that future? A future where there are no coral reefs outside of our tanks… those of us who have actually survived the raging new climate we have created because it was easier to stick our heads in the sand and keep making money and keep voting for idiots.

Since I moved to NY a year ago after 28 years in Miami; I learned to forage for wild mushrooms, I have hiked to so many beautiful places with still so many more places to go, I stopped stressing about selling corals and just enjoy life, I grow vegetables in a community garden, I started growing coleus and created a clone army, I joined the love of my life in creating the world I want to live in, and truly every day is a beautiful day. My muscles are sore from hiking all the time and my fridge is full of yummy wild things. I don’t miss the hustle and the traffic, the sound of car horns and ambulances. We don’t need more stuff, we need more connection to our planet.

Happy Friday friends!

I’m finally back, I had a few unexpected bumps in the reefing road recently 😅 so it’s taken longer to have Reefgardener.com open again, but now it is.

Introducing our monster arms, branching green star polyps! This is a very uncommon, truly branching green star polyp coral, it would much rather grow wicked long branches than encrust quickly everywhere. Be sure to get yours today! 🤓

Happy Sunday to you all!

It took a few weeks, but we have some better shipping rates negotiated with a new company. I may offer fedex and ups while I decide which company I prefer, I have a long and happy history with Periship but I’m not sure yet if they will be able to match rates.

That being said overnight shipping rates have gone up and there’s just no way around it. I don’t like having to raise the price of the corals we grow to accommodate for the extra cost so I plan to offer shipping rates that are pretty much at cost.

As our farm and inventory grows (Goddess willing) I will continue the practice of adding free frags to orders to help make up for the fuel costs that are driving up shipping prices.

I will plan to open the website back up in early May, everything is already loaded and ready to go. Thank you all for your patience while I have been sorting out the details. We are located in Western NY now and if you would like to see our farm in person that is an option. 🤓

Seven months in and I’m super happy with the progress. Everything is growing amazing under the Viparspectra LEDs, I can truly keep whatever I want nowadays and that feels great after a few years of struggling with the old setup. These have even been spread and par intensity than my Radions. Proof that you don’t need expensive lights to grow beautiful corals.
Just patience and a steady hand, be consistent with your care and water chemistry testing and anything is possible.

My leather corals came with me from Miami and most of them are 4 - 7 years in my care.

Calcium 440, Alk 8.5, Magnesium 1300, phosphates trace, nitrates trace, salinity 1.025
I dose 4 ml of iodide per week, spot feed reef blizzard twice a week, water change about 15% once a month, run my skimmer 6 hours at night about 3 days a week. I only have three small fish and feed a little pellets once a day for the clown. Mandarin is PHAT. 🤓

About a year and a half ago I ordered some corals from Indonesia and a small patch of these green star polyps came in on a soft coral combo rock. I didn’t think much about it, just figured they were regular gsp and didn’t pay any attention. I stole most of the corals from the combo rock to sell and this patch kept growing.

After about six months I had about a 3 inch patch, I noticed they were even brighter than my regular gsp, slower growing, and seemed to be growing branchy tubes. Now I know that regular gsp will become sort of branchy on parts of it, but this thing puts out long tubes all over and really doesn’t encrust on the glass at all.

Even the frags I make start out encrusting and then the new tissue becomes all tubular. It’s pretty darn cool. Looks like I have a big, wooly green spider in my reef tank. 🤓

I’m chatting with three different companies about overnight shipping rates this week; one thing I can say is in the 7 months that my business has been paused shipping prices have gone up A LOT. It’s kind of depressing. I wish shipping corals second day air was an option, but it really isn’t most of the time.

I’m guessing that many other online coral stores are just taking a loss on shipping fees in order to encourage sales. Here’s hoping that one of these shippers comes through with cheaper rates. 🫣
