Here’s what to check instead:

- Starch and sugar, both on the label
- NSC, which is the two combined
- A target near or under 10 to 12% for insulin-sensitive horses

A feed can look great on starch and still be high in sugar, which defeats the purpose for horses with metabolic concerns.

Feeding a horse with EMS? The bag comes after the hay math. 🐴

Most overweight EMS horses don’t need a special muesli. The plan is simpler than that:

- Test your hay and aim for about 10% NSC or lower
- Weigh the ration instead of counting flakes
- Keep pasture limited
- Add a balancer so the diet stays complete
- Move your horse if they’re sound

Cut calories slowly. Going too deep too fast can cause serious problems, especially in minis, ponies, and donkeys, so let your vet set the pace.

A grain-free concentrate only comes in when a horse can’t hold weight on forage, and only with your vet’s okay.
