My daughter came out of school, took my hand, and said, “Mom, divorce Dad. He doesn’t love us.” That night, over a single chicken drumstick, my husband humiliated her again and removed me from the family group chat for the twenty-eighth time. I didn’t argue. I held my daughter close and made a decision he never believed I would actually follow through on.
The collapse of a five-year marriage, ironically enough, began over a single chicken drumstick.
There was only one left on the dinner table. Tristan—my husband’s thirteen-year-old son—had already declared he was full and put his chopsticks down. My four-year-old daughter, Chloe, waited a few hesitant seconds before shyly reaching for it. But she had barely taken a small bite when Tristan suddenly slammed his hand on the table.
"I still wanted that!"
Zachary, my husband, slowly looked up from his phone screen. He didn't ask what had happened. Instead, he coldly opened WhatsApp and... removed me from the family group chat. It was the twenty-eighth time.
"You know Tristan loves chicken," his voice was devoid of emotion. "Since he isn’t your biological son, you should be even more careful not to make him feel pushed aside."
I stared at the man I had married, feeling a chill seep into my bones. "And what about Chloe? She's only four!"
"She needs to learn how to share with her older brother. Stop turning everything into a drama, Charlotte. Make Chloe apologize to Tristan, and if she behaves, I’ll add you back to the group in a few days."
At that exact moment, Chloe slipped out of my arms. Before I could stop her, she darted toward the trash can.
"Dad, please don't be mad at Mom! It was my fault! I'll give the chicken back to Tristan!"
Trembling violently, my tiny daughter shoved two small fingers into her mouth.
"Chloe!" I cried out, lunging forward to grab the little hands that were desperately trying to force herself to throw up. Tears streamed down my face. "No, sweetheart. You don't have to give anything back. You didn't do anything wrong."
Tristan scoffed. "See, Dad? She’s putting on a show just like her mother."
I held my breath, waiting for Zachary to react. Waiting for him to look at his traumatized four-year-old daughter, to hold her, to ask if she was okay. But he didn't.
"That’s what happens when you spoil her," Zachary sighed impatiently. "She’s already learned how to manipulate people."
The very last thread holding me to this house snapped. I scooped Chloe up into my arms and turned toward our bedroom.
"When you’re done calming her down," Zachary’s callous voice echoed behind me, "come back out, clear the table, and help Tristan with his homework!"
The bedroom door slammed shut, blocking out the laughter suddenly echoing from his phone’s speaker outside—where his ex-wife was currently being praised by his parents.
In my arms, Chloe curled into a tight ball. She looked up at me with tear-soaked eyes and whispered something that completely shattered my heart: "Mom... does Dad only love Tristan? Can we leave?"
That night, holding my sobbing daughter, I pulled out my phone and made a decision Zachary never believed I would actually follow through on...
