On this beautiful Tuesday afternoon, we’d like to give a shout out to Mason (aka Poodle), who not only makes sure Dr. Hoerr’s notes are done, she also supervises the chaos goblin that is Freddie Purrcury. It’s an exhausting job, but she does it so well! 🥰

Does your fur baby have an unlikely BFF? Drop your pics below! 🐾❤️😻🐶

Meet Freddie Purrcury! He came to us seeking care for a wounded leg and overall sickly demeanor. He had a very high fever and lack of appetite. After several days of around the clock care with mild improvement, Dr. Hoerr started to notice ulcers on Freddie’s tongue. Turns out, Freddie not only had quite the wounded leg; he also had Feline Calicivirus.

Calicivirus is a very contagious virus spread through secretions from eyes, nose or mouth. It is common in multi-cat environments like shelters, rescues, or breeding colonies and typically affects kittens and young cats.

Mild symptoms may appear as acute respiratory infections, such as coughing, sneezing, eye and nasal discharge, and nose lesions. Affected cats can develop a fever, oral and/or nasal lesions, which can cause heavy drooling and a reduced appetite. They can also be lethargic and become dehydrated. Severe cases of calicivirus infection can cause more serious complications including pneumonia, bleeding, and death.

Most cats experience mild symptoms and recover from infection, especially cats that have been vaccinated against calicivirus. Calicivirus is the “C” in the FVRCP vaccine: Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia.

Because calicivirus is common, contagious and preventable, it is important to make sure your cats are up to date on their FVRCP vaccinations.

Freddie has thankfully made a full recovery and is growing up to be quite the little orange menace. He will scream “I Want to Break Free” whenever he is contained to his play area and has become quite the “Killer Queen”.

As pets get older, their medical needs change, just like in people! Having your senior pet examined every six months can help you and your veterinarian determine the best way to help your fur baby age gracefully, just like Dr. Lorentzen’s 17 years young boy, Nesta!
