DAR Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of abused animals in MX donors. and Canada to be adopted.

Defenders of Animals at Risk (DAR) Foundation is a 100% volunteer ran non-profit dedicated to protecting and improving the lives of abused, abandoned, mistreated, and neglected animals in Mexico. We are the U.S.-based sister organization of Fundación DAR, a cat and dog shelter located in Tequisquiapan, Querétaro, Mexico. DAR Foundation helps raise awareness about the plight of neglected animals in

Mexico, while also providing funding from U.S. All donations collected through us go to Fundación DAR to keep their shelter of 50+ animals running. It also helps cover abused animal’s medical costs, animal welfare education efforts, low-cost vaccination and sterilization clinics for the public, and covers the cost of flying dogs to the U.S.

🐾Paws & Facts: That itch might be coming from their bowl. 🐾🍗

If your dog is constantly scratching, licking their paws, shaking their head, or dealing with recurring ear infections — and you've ruled out fleas and environmental causes — the answer might be hiding in their food bowl. 🐶

Food allergies in dogs develop when their immune system mistakenly identifies a protein as a threat. The most common triggers are animal proteins like beef, chicken, and dairy — ironically, the very ingredients found in most standard dog foods. Grains like wheat can also be a culprit, though grain allergies are actually less common than protein allergies.

Unlike humans, dogs rarely show food allergies through digestive symptoms alone. The most tell-tale signs are skin-related: chronic itching, red or inflamed skin, recurring ear infections, and obsessive paw licking.

Diagnosing a food allergy requires patience — typically an 8-12 week elimination diet under vet guidance, where all previous foods are removed and a novel protein source is introduced. It's a process, but finding the answer can completely transform your dog's quality of life. 🧡

HAPPY LIFE AHEAD, CHISPA! ❤️

🐾 Chispa started life in a hoarding situation, surrounded by dozens of dogs, malnourished and living in conditions no animal should ever endure. She was only a few months old when rescuers found her.
She came to the shelter in February 2023, tiny and fragile. With care and love, she was nursed back to health. The shelter became her home, and for more than three years, she waited for the day when someone would finally choose her. That day came! 🎉❤️

Chispa has been adopted by a wonderful family, and she has a very special girl by her side. Seeing them together makes our hearts so happy. After everything Chispa went through at the beginning of her life, she finally has what she always deserved: a family to love her, a child to share adventures with, and a home of her own. 🏡❤️
From a tiny puppy who had never known a real home… to a beloved family member.
This is why we rescue. This is why we never give up. 🐾❤️

Sia Has Waited Long Enough ❤️

🐾 She was just four months old when we found her on the street with a hurt paw. No owner was there, and no one ever came looking for her. We brought her to safety, and that shelter became the only home she has ever known.

🐾 Paws & Facts: When your dog goes quiet, pay attention. 🐾

Your normally bouncy, social dog suddenly wants to be alone. They're tucked away in a corner, quieter than usual, not interested in food or play. It might seem like they just need space — but this behavior can be an important warning sign. 🐶

Dogs are instinctive about hiding vulnerability. In the wild, a sick or injured animal that showed weakness was at risk — from predators, from rivals within the pack. So dogs evolved to mask pain and illness for as long as possible. It's a deeply wired survival strategy, and domestic dogs still carry it.

This is one of the reasons why dogs can be so difficult to read when something is wrong. By the time they're visibly unwell — refusing food, unable to move comfortably, showing obvious distress — they may have been dealing with the problem for days or even weeks.

Knowing your dog's normal behavior is one of the most valuable things you can do as an owner. Changes in energy, appetite, sleep, or social behavior are all worth noting. And regular vet check-ups, even when your dog seems perfectly fine, can catch problems early.

Building a Healthy Bowl 🐶🥕🥩

A balanced diet is about much more than simply filling a bowl with meat, vegetables, and carbohydrates.

Every dog needs the right balance of essential nutrients—including amino acids, fats and essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals. And those needs can vary depending on a dog's age, size, activity level, health, and individual circumstances.

That's why there is no single percentage formula that is perfect for every dog. A bowl that looks healthy can still be missing important nutrients or contain too much of others.

For healthy adult dogs, a complete and balanced commercial diet formulated for their life stage can provide appropriate nutrition. If you prepare your dog's meals at home regularly, it is best to use a recipe specifically formulated for your dog by a qualified veterinary nutrition professional. 🐾

Puppies, senior dogs, highly active dogs, and dogs with health conditions may have very different nutritional needs.

A healthy bowl isn't just about the ingredients you can see — it's about making sure your dog receives everything their body needs. ❤️

🚨 ANIMAL ABUSE HAS CONSEQUENCES 🚨

Animal abuse and abandonment don't end with one suffering animal. They create a ripple effect that can affect entire communities.

💔 Cruelty: Animals are beaten, burned, starved, injured, abandoned, and left without food or water.

🦠 Disease: Neglected and unvaccinated animals can spread preventable diseases.

🐕 Stray populations: Abandoned dogs can form packs, fight, reproduce, and create risks for animals and people.

🚗 Road dangers: Animals on the streets can be injured or killed—and cause serious traffic accidents.

☠️ Poisoning: Poison can harm not only the targeted animal, but other pets, wildlife, and even children.

💔 And there is another consequence: when cruelty becomes normal, compassion disappears.

At DAR Foundation, we see these consequences every day. But we don't want to simply treat the results—we want to help stop the cycle.

🐾 Paws & Facts: Ah yes. The sock thief strikes again. 🧦

You've lost count of how many single socks you own. There's a shoe somewhere in the house that hasn't been seen in three days. And your dog? Looking very innocent. 🐶

The sock and shoe obsession is actually pretty sweet when you understand it. Your feet carry your scent more than almost any other part of your body, so your socks and shoes smell intensely of you. To your dog, that smell can mean safety, comfort, and connection. Carrying or lying with your sock when you're gone may be their way of keeping you close.

There's also a learned behavior component: the moment your dog grabs a sock, the whole house erupts. You chase them, call their name, negotiate... From your dog's perspective, that sock is basically a magic attention device. 😄

If the habit becomes a problem, especially if they're swallowing fabric, which can be dangerous, redirect them with appropriate chew toys and provide plenty of mental stimulation.

But the occasional stolen sock? That's just love. 🧡

💔🐾 COCO NEEDS YOUR HELP 🐾💔

Coco was attacked by other dogs and suffered a serious injury to his leg. His elderly owner simply could not afford the urgent care he needed.

We couldn't leave him without help. We performed the surgery without asking for payment, and thankfully, Coco is now healing. ❤️

Paws & Facts: Bowl empty in 10 seconds flat. 😳

You put the food down. You blink. It's gone. Your dog is already looking at you like they haven't eaten in a week. Sound familiar? 🐶

Eating at lightning speed is deeply rooted in survival instinct. Wild dogs had to compete for every meal, and hesitating meant losing out. Even though your dog has a guaranteed meal twice a day, that ancient urgency can still be very much present.

The problem is that eating too fast comes with real health risks. Dogs who gobble their food can swallow large amounts of air, which may lead to bloat — a serious and potentially life-threatening condition where the stomach fills with gas and can twist. It's especially common in large, deep-chested breeds like Great Danes, German Shepherds, and Boxers.

If your dog is a speed eater, slow feeder bowls, puzzle feeders, or simply spreading their food on a flat surface can make a big difference. It's a small change that can protect their health in a big way. 🧡
