As the mom of Hopey and Zitto, I’ve spent years caring for pets with mobility challenges, paralysis, incontinence, and other special needs. Through that experience, I’ve learned that every pet deserves patient, compassionate care tailored to their individual needs.

Zitto’s story…
When Zitto came into my life, he was only around 2 years old… but the condition he was in made vets think he could have been a senior.

He was completely caked in f***s, had no hair left on his butt, scrapes and scars covering his legs and feet from dragging himself around, severely overgrown nails, a bloated stomach, constant uncontrollable diarrhea, worms, and rotted infected teeth so bad he needed major dental work immediately. He couldn’t walk and only scooted himself around to survive.

I was told euthanasia was probably the kindest option.
But something in me refused to give up on him.

Once we got him cleaned up, got all his dental work done, got him worm free, found the right diet, and finally gave him the support and care he deserved… he transformed.

Then came his wheels.
And from the very first moment, he was an absolute natural in them. 🖤

That was all he needed.
A chance.

Now he’s the healthiest, happiest boy I could have ever dreamed of him becoming. He goes everywhere with me, wins over every person he meets, and carries himself like the old soul of the group.

Zitto is proof that disabled dogs are not broken dogs. So many are given up on when really they just need someone willing to fight for them.

He is one of the biggest reasons behind my dream of opening a sanctuary for disabled and special needs animals someday. Because every animal deserves the chance he got. 🖤

Hi, I’m Sarah — the person behind The Paws-abilities 🖤🐾

Animals have always been my entire world, but everything truly changed after adopting my disabled babies.

Through Hopey, Zitto, Archie, and Boomer, I saw firsthand how often disabled and special needs dogs are overlooked, neglected, underestimated, or treated like they are “less than” because they’re different.

And honestly, I think part of why this mission means so much to me is because I’ve spent a lot of my life feeling different and outcasted too.

My babies helped me realize that being different does not make you broken. It does not make you less worthy of love, care, happiness, or belonging.

What started as rescuing my own babies slowly became a much bigger dream: creating a sanctuary dedicated to paraplegic, disabled, and medically complex dogs — a place where they are safe, understood, and loved exactly as they are.

Right now, The Paws-abilities is just the beginning of that journey. I’m still building, learning, planning, and dreaming big, but every future sanctuary starts somewhere.

My goal is not only to rescue dogs, but also to help change the way people see disability in animals. These dogs are resilient, adaptable, joyful, and capable of incredible lives.
