🐢 Tuck’s Transformation ! 🐢

Meet Tuck, a 20 year old box turtle whose new owner noticed he wasn’t eating well after rescue. In fact, he rarely extended his head from his shell.

During his exam, we discovered the problem: an overgrown and slightly broken beak. A turtle’s beak grows continuously throughout its life, and when it becomes too long, eating can become difficult and uncomfortable.

With some gentle sedation, we were able to carefully trim Tuck’s beak. The improvement was almost immediate—he began extending his head normally and was back to eating comfortably.

💡 Did you know?
Box turtles are omnivores and do best on a varied diet of leafy greens, vegetables, insects, worms, and small amounts of fruit. Proper nutrition and natural chewing behaviors help promote normal beak wear.

✂️ How often do turtles need beak trims?
There is no set schedule. Some turtles never need one, while others may require periodic trims depending on diet, beak alignment, and natural wear.

We’re happy to report that Tuck is back to enjoying his meals and feeling much more like himself!

Diet is the cornerstone of therapy for chronic enteropathy and many dogs are food-responsive on diet alone.  The caveat is you MAY have to trial at least 3 diets to get that sweet spot. 

*Not included in this list are home prepared therapeutic diets. 

Usually you’ll see a response within 10-14 days.

Had the pleasure of being on the veterinarian team for the 2023 Idaho Sled Dog challenge. The Running of the Idaho Sled Dog Challenge (ISDC) includes three races: a 100-mile, 300-mile and the Warm Lake Stage Race, a two-day 52-mile sprint race. The premier event is the 300-mile race, one of the only three Iditarod qualifiers in the lower 48.

Lack of snow has been a major limiting factor the past few years!
