Caiden is one of our local Canine Blood Heroes — a healthy, loved family dog whose donations help support veterinary teams when another dog needs blood in an urgent moment.

Every donor in our network represents something powerful: a caring family, a trusted clinic partnership, and a dog with the heart to help another best friend get a second chance.

This video captures Ranger’s whole personality: adventure dog, community supporter, pup cup enthusiast, and yes — lifesaving blood donor.

Years later, Ranger is still going strong as part of the Canine Blood Heroes Boise family. Through regular donations, he helps support local dogs facing surgery, trauma, illness, and unexpected emergencies.

We’re grateful for Ranger’s big heart, playful spirit, and continued commitment to helping fellow best friends in need. (And a special thank you to Ranger’s mom for the creativity, encouragement, and ongoing support that helps make canine blood donation more visible in our community.)

In addition to her veterinary clinical education and Fear Free Professional certification, Chelsea has also been trained in Animal Reiki.

That means her approach to canine blood donation includes both medical professionalism and a deep respect for each dog’s comfort, energy, and emotional well-being.

From the first greeting to the blood collection and post-donation celebration, Chelsea’s goal is to help each donor feel relaxed, safe, supported, and cared for.

Because these dogs aren’t just donors; they’re beloved family members.

Is Your Dog a Potential Blood Donor?

Many dogs have the ability to help save the life of another dog through blood donation.

We're often asked what makes a good donor candidate. In general, donor dogs are:

✔️ Over 50 pounds
✔️ Between 1–7 years old
✔️ In good overall health
✔️ Current on vaccinations
✔️ Comfortable being handled and remaining still during a brief collection procedure

A typical donation takes about 30 minutes and may provide blood products that help dogs undergoing surgery, recovering from trauma, managing illness, or facing other medical emergencies.

By building a network of healthy local donors, we're helping veterinary clinics throughout the Treasure Valley maintain access to this critical resource when it's needed most.

During transfusion, veterinary teams monitor temperature, pulse, respiration, PCV/TS, and other patient responses before, during, after, and for hours following treatment.

Every donor dog in our program helps local veterinary teams prepare for the unexpected and gives another dog the chance to recover, heal, and return home to the people who love them.

That's the power of canine blood donation. ❤️
