Once the mornings turn cold, plenty of owners notice their dog is slower out of bed.

Four small changes help: a slow five-minute warm-up before anything faster, a mat where they land, a towel after wet walks, and an eye on the winter weight.

Stiffness that doesn't ease after a few minutes of walking is worth a vet visit.

Natalie's whippet Domino had cruciate surgery. At the end of week 12 she wrote to us:

"Throughout it all we stuck very close to your rehab book. Weeks 11-12 are where he really caught up. He is right where he should be now at the end of week 12."

Recovery doesn't move in a straight line. Some weeks look like nothing is happening. Then it catches up.

Here's the plain version: the kneecap slips out of its groove, then usually slips back. You might see a skip in the step, a few strides on three legs, then nothing. Your vet grades it, and the grade shapes the plan.

Wednesday is Pet Obesity Awareness Day, so here's Dr. James's body condition chart.

It shows the same dog at every score from 1 (very thin) to 9 (morbidly obese). Look from the side, look from above, feel the ribs, then compare. The TopDog target zone is 4 to 5.

No scale, and no judgement. Weight creeps up on dogs we see every day, partly because we see them every day.

The TopDog guides didn't start as marketing.

In the fall of 2004 Dr. James St. Clair opened TopDog as a canine rehabilitation facility, working mostly with dogs after orthopedic surgery and older dogs. Within six months he'd written the first Home Rehab Guide, because owners were going home from surgery with too little information, and often conflicting information.
