"This course was great! I started volunteering to decoy with my services k9 team in hopes of making the team later this year. After taking this course, every handler mentioned that I became way more comfortable with the dogs and knew what I was doing. I think the biggest take away from me was learning how to read the dog and how they react while on the bite and how to interact based off their actions." - Leerburg Customer

Come spend 3 days working with Kevin Sheldahl on detection training. Individualized work and problem solving for all levels of dogs, and all detection specialties. The seminar will be at Leerburg in Menomonie Wisconsin, November 6th through November 8th, 2026.

Working spots available for ALL levels of dogs. Please select "Working Spot" when purchasing. After checkout we will send an email confirmation with more details.

Whether you are starting from scratch with a young dog or working on advanced skills, Kevin will work with dogs of all levels. Detection and scent work aren’t just for working K9s- it can be one of the most mentally enriching activities you can offer your pet. Dogs are built to use their noses, and giving them structured scent work taps into their natural hunting drives in a way that burns mental and physical energy, builds confidence, and is fun for both the dog and the handler. Detection/Scent work is a great activity for dogs of almost any age or physical ability, and can be used for competitive nose work, or for shed hunting or other forms of detection. This is a great opportunity to get started or to hone your existing skills with one of the best trainers in the field.

"So you’re going to need treats forever?" 🙄

Yep. Would you keep showing up to work if your paycheck stopped?

We never stop using rewards with our dogs. We change HOW OFTEN and HOW PREDICTABLY they come.

Continuous → Fixed → Variable → Random

Get the timing right, and you'll have a dog that works like a slot machine player: it knows the next rep might be the one that pays. 🎰

And the paycheck doesn’t have to be food. A game of tug, a toy, or the door opening for a walk all count.

Some trainers use "variable" and "random" interchangeably. At Leerburg, we use them to mean two different things:

Variable: unpredictable rewards within a training session.
Random: unpredictable rewards spread out over days or weeks.

Random reinforcement is the final stage, and it is how we maintain known behaviors for the life of the dog. For example, once your dog reliably goes potty on cue, you might reward it only every few days instead of every time. A dog that sits at the door before going out might get a treat once this week and praise the rest of the time.
