Between Their Ears
It doesn't matter how you ride,
in dressage whites or over the course,
it builds a quiet kind of pride
that grows between you and your horse.
It teaches discipline and grit:
the early barns, the aching hands,
the falls, the choice to get back on it,
the patience no one understands.
And all along the dusty way
come friends who hold you when you're down,
the laughter at the end of day,
the tack-room jokes, the ride to town.
But if you're lucky, if you're blessed
to see the world from up so high,
atop a heart that beats and breathes,
you'll find yourself beneath that sky.
Your past rides with you, soft and near,
your present settles in your seat,
your future opens, bright and clear
in the rhythm of four feet.
And somewhere in that sacred sound,
the creak of leather, breath, and mane,
you'll find your God on hallowed ground
and know you're not alone again.
It won't erase the weight you bear
or make the hardest seasons kind,
but it gives back enough of you
to face them with a steadier mind.
