Ahoy mateys! Check out this video of Dread Pirate Roberts the juvenile green sea turtle interacting with these special enrichment items! Sea turtles enjoy giving their own shells a good scratch, often using rock outcroppings in the ocean for feel-good sensations - and to "clean" their shells of barnacles or other debris. Bonus: This enrichment can also give Dread Pirate Roberts and other sea turtles a fun way to forage for their meals!

Dread Pirate Roberts was brought to East Coast Zoological Foundation's Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Center on "Talk Like a Pirate Day," leading to this scallywag's unique name. The name is also a nod to "The Princess Bride." This green sea turtle was accidentally hooked on Jetty Park Fishing Pier in Port Canaveral and is now being treated for parasites.

It's always important to call wildlife officials if you accidentally hook a sea turtle or see one in distress. If you're in Brevard County, call the Sea Turtle Preservation Society at 321-206-0646. For anywhere in Florida contact Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commissions’ Wildlife Alert Hotline at 1-888-404-FWCC.

Early voting for Brevard County opens tomorrow! Brevard County residents it's time to turn out at vote yes to renew the Save Our Indian River Lagoon Half-Cent Sales Tax (SOIRL).For almost 10 years, the SOIRL Half-Cent Sales Tax has invested in science-based projects to reduce pollution, improve water quality, restore natural ecosystems, and more, in the Indian River Lagoon. A Citizens Oversight Committee works to ensure these projects using the best tools and techniques for restoring the Indian River Lagoon – among many other tasks.

Their skin might be hidden beneath fur and feathers, but our animal residents still enjoy munching on a skin-nourishing treat of grapes and gelatin!

Gelatin is often used as a dietary supplement for our omnivorous residents, like Fig the wrinkled hornbill and our white-nosed coatis, because it contains protein from animal collagen. Increased collagen in an animal’s diet can contribute to a strengthened skin barrier, helping to defend against skin conditions and giving animals a shiny coat.

Other health benefits of collagen include aiding in repair of connective tissue and muscle, improved nutrient absorption during digestion, and building cartilage. Coupled with grapes for a healthy crunch, this treat provided a nutritious enrichment opportunity for these animals. 🍇
