Please keep pets current on rabies vaccination!

🚨 RABIES ALERT – MELBOURNE AREA 🚨

The Florida Department of Health in Brevard County has issued a 60-day rabies alert after a raccoon captured near Andrews Avenue in Melbourne on August 27 tested positive for rabies.

The affected area is bordered by:
• West Eau Gallie Boulevard to the north
• Sarno Road to the south
• Croton Road to the east
• North Wickham Road to the west

Rabies is currently present in the local wild animal population, so please use extra caution with wildlife and stray animals.

🐾 Keep your pets current on their rabies vaccinations.
🐾 Keep dogs on a leash when outside.
🐾 Secure livestock and outdoor animals.
🐾 Avoid contact with raccoons, bats, foxes, skunks, otters, bobcats, coyotes and stray animals.
🐾 Do not leave pet food or unsecured garbage outside where it may attract wildlife.

If you or your pet is bitten or scratched by a wild or stray animal, seek medical or veterinary attention immediately.

📞 Report human exposures to DOH-Brevard: 321-634-6337, option 3
📞 Report stray animals to Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Animal Services: 321-633-2024

And one more reminder from your veterinary team: even indoor pets should remain current on their rabies vaccines. Bats and other wildlife can occasionally find their way inside homes, and rabies is nearly always fatal once symptoms develop.

Please share so our Melbourne and Eau Gallie neighbors are aware. ❤️🐾

🚨 LEPTOSPIROSIS: What Every Pet Parent Needs to Know About This Silent, Potentially Fatal Threat

Let's talk about a disease that does not get nearly enough attention, and when it does, the conversation often goes sideways because of misinformation on both ends of the spectrum.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection caused by Leptospira spirochetes, a corkscrew-shaped bacteria with over 300 known serovars. It is not just a dog disease. Leptospirosis is the most common zoonotic infection in the world, meaning your dog can transmit it to you.

---
🌊 How Does a Dog Contract Leptospirosis?

This is where pet parents are often shocked, because you do not need to live on a farm or let your dog swim in lakes.

All dogs are at risk regardless of age, breed, lifestyle, or geographic location. Risk increases with exposure to slow-moving or stagnant water, roaming on rural properties, contact with wildlife or rodents (even in the backyard), and contact with other dogs in urban areas, dog parks, or boarding facilities.

Transmission occurs via direct contact with contaminated urine or organs, or indirectly through contaminated environments. Environmental factors like heavy rainfall, flooding, and poor sanitation significantly influence transmission.

A dog can contract it from a puddle. A wet patch of grass. Contaminated soil tracked in from outside. The organism enters through mucous membranes, the eyes, cuts in the skin, or by ingestion.

---
🤒 What Are the Symptoms?

Leptospirosis is dangerous because the signs can be vague and easy to dismiss early on.

Signs vary depending on the bacterial strain and the dog's immune response. Some dogs show no signs or recover on their own; others develop severe, life-threatening illness.

Common symptoms include:
✔️ Fever
✔️ Lethargy
✔️ Muscle or joint pain
✔️ Vomiting
✔️ Diarrhea
✔️ Loss of appetite
✔️ Increased thirst and urination (or inability to urinate)
✔️ Jaundice (yellowing of the eyes, gums, or skin)
✔️ Breathing difficulties in severe cases

Because progression to acute kidney injury can occur within 24 to 48 hours, veterinarians should have a high index of suspicion and consider early treatment.

If you suspect leptospirosis, this is an emergency. Do not wait for a "next available" appointment.

---
💊 Treatment

Treatment involves antibiotics and supportive care, which may include fluid therapy, medications, and nutritional support. Dogs with severe disease may need oxygen therapy, mechanical breathing support, or dialysis. When treated early, the chance of recovery is good, but there is still a risk of permanent residual kidney or liver damage.

Early enteral nutrition with a highly digestible, normal- to high-protein diet is indicated. Kidney diets are generally not appropriate for dogs with leptospirosis as they tend to be high in fat, which can exacerbate gastroenteritis or pancreatitis.

This is a situation where nutrition actually matters acutely. Digestibility and protein quality become critical in recovery.

💉 Now Let's Talk About the Vaccine...Honestly

I realize this is where it gets complicated for a lot of pet parents. So let's look at what the science actually says, not what social media says.

The concern: Pet parents (particularly of small breeds) have long worried about adverse reactions to the lepto vaccine. And that concern is not completely unfounded. Among bacterin vaccines specifically (bacterial rather than viral vaccines), leptospirosis has the highest rate of adverse reactions compared to Bordetella and Lyme.

Small-breed dogs may be at higher risk of vaccine-associated adverse events.

While adverse reactions to leptospiral vaccines are not common, up to 53 adverse events per 10,000 doses do occur, with most being minor. Reactions include injection site pain, mild fever, anorexia, and malaise. Serious anaphylaxis has been reported no more frequently than for dogs given other vaccine antigens.

In 2023, the UK's Veterinary Medicines Directorate confirmed that the rate of reported adverse events had been decreasing over time, with fewer than 2 reports per 10,000 doses for the 2-serovar vaccine and fewer than 5 per 10,000 for the 4-serovar vaccine.

Recent studies suggest that, owing to new vaccine technology, currently available leptospirosis vaccines have an adverse effect profile similar to that of the DAPP combination vaccine, even in small-breed dogs.

On efficacy: A systematic review and meta-analysis demonstrated that commercially available vaccines against leptospirosis provide an overall 84% protection against clinical disease and 88% protection against renal carrier status.

🌿 Does Holistic Health & Diet Play a Role?

While diet cannot prevent leptospirosis, a nutritionally optimized immune system is always your dog's first line of defense against any pathogen. A fresh, species-appropriate diet that supports gut integrity, reduces chronic inflammation, and provides adequate zinc, vitamin D, and antioxidants gives the immune system the raw materials it needs to mount a faster, stronger response.

During recovery, nutritional support is clinically significant. Digestibility, protein quality, and gut mucosal repair matter enormously in how a dog rebounds from the kidney and liver damage lepto can cause.

Think of it this way: diet doesn't replace protection, rather it amplifies your dog's ability to fight back.

⚠️ Points to Remember
✔ Leptospirosis is real, it's rising in prevalence, and it does not discriminate by zip code or lifestyle
✔ It can kill, and it can infect your family
✔ Symptoms can escalate to acute kidney failure within 48 hours. This is an emergency disease
✔ The vaccine concern is valid, but the science shows adverse events are rare and declining with newer formulations
✔ Holistic support builds the foundation, but a frank conversation with a trusted vet about your specific dog's risk is non-negotiable

Good morning and Happy Caturday!

03/26/2026

Spring is here! And with that comes a warning about Leptospirosis, a disease caused by infection with Leptospira bacteria.

All dogs are at risk of leptospirosis, regardless of age, breed, lifestyle, geographic location, time of year, and other factors. The following situations can increase that risk:

➡Exposure to or drinking from slow-moving or stagnant water sources, like ponds, rivers, lakes, or streams
➡ Roaming on rural properties (because of exposure to potentially infected wildlife or farm animals or urine-contaminated water sources)
➡ Exposure to wild animals (especially rodents) or farm animals, even if in the backyard
➡ Contact with other dogs (such as in urban areas, dog parks, or boarding or training facilities)
