🚨 RABIES ALERT – MELBOURNE AREA 🚨
The Florida Department of Health in Brevard County has issued a 60-day rabies alert after a raccoon captured near Andrews Avenue in Melbourne on August 27 tested positive for rabies.
The affected area is bordered by:
• West Eau Gallie Boulevard to the north
• Sarno Road to the south
• Croton Road to the east
• North Wickham Road to the west
Rabies is currently present in the local wild animal population, so please use extra caution with wildlife and stray animals.
🐾 Keep your pets current on their rabies vaccinations.
🐾 Keep dogs on a leash when outside.
🐾 Secure livestock and outdoor animals.
🐾 Avoid contact with raccoons, bats, foxes, skunks, otters, bobcats, coyotes and stray animals.
🐾 Do not leave pet food or unsecured garbage outside where it may attract wildlife.
If you or your pet is bitten or scratched by a wild or stray animal, seek medical or veterinary attention immediately.

And one more reminder from your veterinary team: even indoor pets should remain current on their rabies vaccines. Bats and other wildlife can occasionally find their way inside homes, and rabies is nearly always fatal once symptoms develop.
