Celebrating the team members who make VWP a great place for pets and people.
This week: Madi!

Madi has been a Registered Veterinary Technician with our practice for a year and a half. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Technology from Morehead State University and is passionate about providing compassionate, high-quality care to every patient she meets.

From a young age, Madi knew she wanted to be involved in the health and welfare of animals. Today, she enjoys combining her love of learning with her dedication to helping pets feel comfortable and cared for during their visits. One of the most rewarding parts of her job is seeing pets recover and return to good health after illness or injury.

Madi especially enjoys getting to know the unique personalities of the pets she works with and values the opportunity to build relationships with both patients and their families. Her kindness and patience help create a positive experience for pets, even during stressful situations.

Outside of work, Madi enjoys horseback riding and showing, as well as baking. Her favorite species is the American Quarter Horse, which makes perfect sense considering she shares her life with Benny, her Quarter Horse. She also has a Havanese named Hazel, a Pacific Parrotlet named Spice, and a Betta fish named Toby Keith.

Did you know that black cats can rust in the sun?

If black cats spend a lot of time in the sun, they can actually develop light red or orange highlights! The rays from the sun bleach the pigment from the fur, which causes it to lighten. Because their fur isn't alive, it will stay this lighter color until they shed!

September is Animal Pain Awareness Month🐾

Just like humans, animals can experience immense pain. However, unlike humans, they can't tell us when they are in pain. This is why it's so important to recognize the signs of pain in our pets.

There are two main types of pain: acute and chronic.

🐾Acute pain happens most often following a surgery, infection, or traumatic injury.
🐾Chronic pain is most commonly associated with diseases that can be debilitating for dogs and cats. Chronic pain is the type of pain that is most commonly missed or overlooked.

The good news is that there are many different options available to treat pain in our pets, including pain medications, physical rehabilitation, acupuncture, and laser therapy.

Did you know that Dalmatian puppies are born completely white and develop spots later?
Even though it may be hard to believe, Dalmatians are born completely white! Their signature spots don't start to develop until around 2 to 3 weeks of age. Once they start developing they will continue to do so for up to a year or more!

World Mosquito Day was August 20th - mosquitoes carry Heartworm disease so it's always good to be prepared year-round!

Just one bite from an infected mosquito can transmit heartworms to dogs, and even cats. 🦟
At VWP, we recommend:
🐾Year-round heartworm prevention
🐾Annual heartworm testing
🐾Keeping all pets up to date on preventative care
Heartworm disease is preventable, and prevention is far easier, and much less expensive, than treatment!

Today is Black Cat Appreciation Day!🐈‍⬛🖤
Old notions have given these felines a bad reputation, so today is all about turning that reputation around!
Here are some fun facts about black cats:
1) The ASPCA notes that the genes that cause black coloration in cats are the dominant trait, making black the most common coat color.
2) A lot of sun exposure can cause their fur to turn a lighter brownish-red "rust" shade.
3) Panthers in the Americas are actually melanistic (all black) jaguars, while panthers in Africa are melanistic (all black) leopards. You can tell the difference by looking closely at their spots!
4) In some cultures, black cats are thought to bring prosperity, wealth, and good fortune.
