Part 5: Why Nails Matter So Much

Nail trims aren’t just about appearance.

Long nails can affect posture, traction, balance, and overall comfort. Over time, they can even place extra stress on joints and feet.

The good news? Even dogs with very long nails can often improve with consistency.

Inside each nail is something called the quick. The quick can gradually recede when nails are trimmed regularly, allowing the nails to become shorter over time.

That’s why frequent trims every few weeks are often more effective than waiting until nails become overgrown. Small, consistent improvements add up.

Your dog’s feet work hard every day—healthy nails help keep them comfortable. 🐾

The dogs who dislike grooming are often the dogs who need it the most.

When a dog only gets groomed once or twice a year, every appointment feels unfamiliar, stressful, and overwhelming. They may be nervous about the sounds, handling, brushing, nail trims, or simply being away from home.

Regular grooming helps build confidence and trust. Dogs who are groomed consistently often learn what to expect, become more comfortable with the process, and have a much more positive experience overall.

✨ Consistent grooming isn’t just about looking good—it’s about:
• Keeping skin and coats healthy
• Preventing painful matting
• Maintaining nail health
• Catching skin, ear, or health concerns early
• Reducing stress through routine and familiarity

Part 4: Why I Don’t Routinely Express Glands

This one surprises a lot of people. A**l gland expression isn’t something I automatically do during every groom.

Most healthy dogs naturally empty their glands on their own when they have normal bowel movements. Repeatedly expressing glands when they don’t need it can sometimes cause irritation and may even encourage future problems.

If you’re noticing scooting, excessive licking, odor, or discomfort, that’s something worth discussing with your veterinarian.

When it comes to gland care, I believe less is often more unless there’s a clear reason it needs attention.

Sometimes the best thing we can do is let the body work the way it was designed to. ❤️

Part 3: The Puppy Appointment

Puppy appointments aren’t really about getting the perfect haircut. They’re about learning.

Learning that the grooming table isn’t scary. Learning that someone touching their feet is okay. Learning that dryers make noise but won’t hurt them.

The puppies that have the easiest time with grooming as adults usually aren’t the ones that were born brave—they’re the ones that had positive experiences early on.

That’s why puppy appointments are often slower and simpler than owners expect. We’re building confidence, not just creating a cute haircut. Those early experiences can shape how a dog feels about grooming for the rest of their life. 🐾❤️
