Dawn had been hinting for some time that she wanted the inside of the chicken coop remodeled and organized. I kept listening but really didn't want to dive into the project because it was going to be messy.

While she was away last week for six days helping her parents in Colville, Justus and I jumped into the remodel full speed ahead. (See the "before" video.)

After reorganizing, I decided to change the roost. I made it so it can be lifted out of the way for cleaning. I also trimmed the floor to separate the area for the sand from the area for the shavings and p**p drop. It took a bit of creativity, but we did it — all reclaimed lumber once again.

The large side window was fixed because Dawn wanted it to open for a cross breeze. I cut the window out, ran it through the table saw, and reinstalled it with hinges and a window stay.

For the “fat-bottom” girls, I made the lower roost extra wide. In the end, the chickens love it. 🥰

Dawn left the house 30 minutes ago in pouring rain so I went looking for her. She was down sitting in the rain. The closer I got, the more it made sense.

She was with sweet Bumblebee who was by himself in the rain. Thus . . . I gave him my umbrella. These geese bring the best out of us.

Bodyguards
Everyone needs a couple protectors like Sugar Mamma has. The Beepers are always on her sides. They don’t have individual names. They are just the biggest and fluffiest of all our geese.

Sugar is the OG of the girls. She has had a lingering leg injury for over a year and is on meds twice a day to ease and discomfort as she heals. She is a good patient and a great example of resiliency.

This beautiful Barred Owl, Hoot Owl, was just chilling in our lower Sycamores. Odd to see him just hanging during day time hours. He wasn’t even afraid. It’s just part of our bird sanctuary.
