ENRICHMENT NOTES: 9.15.2023
When staff member approached kennel, Moosha was laying on top of den with pupils dilated. Staff member soft spoke to her and slowly slid wet food in the cubby. Moosha did not react just stayed and watched staff member with perked ears and very stiff body.

9.26.2023
When staff member approached kennel, Moosha is balled in the corner sitting above her den with dilated pupils and spiked fur. Staff coax her to the right side of her kennel and then into her den so cleaning is easier and less stressful for Moosha. Once cleaning is finished Moosha is given free reign of her kennel again, she slowly approaches the front of her kennel gives a gentle meow to staff and goes back into hiding.

9.30.2023
When staff member approached kennel and was in the process of unlocking Moosha's kennel, Moosha quickly hid into her den. Staff member attempted to close den door, however Moosha began to hiss and show teeth. As den door was not able to be closed, staff member had to clean around her den.

10.1.2023
Staff member approached moosha's kennel and observed moosha to be hiding on top of his den, tail tucked in and wide eyes towards the staff member. Staff member attempted to reach in for Moosha's water bowl, however was unsuccessful as Moosha hissed and swatted towards staff member's hand, but backed away quickly after.
EVALUATION:
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Mellow
VOCAL: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: Shy
Calm
Timid
Skittish
Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: New home adjustment period
Fearful
Potential challenges comments: has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: Level 3
RECOMMENDATIONS: Adult only home
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY: Moosha was hiding in her den upon. When the cover was lifted Moosha had dilated pupils and flat ears. She wrapped her tail around body and attempted to move further back into her den. The scratch tool was presented to greet to ignore it again tried to move away. She tolerated being touched but continued to move away while lip licking. Interaction was ended to reduce FAS.

Moosha tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.

Care Center Location: Brooklyn Animal Care Center
Zip Code: BROOKLYN NY 11208
Intake Type: Stray (No ID)
Medical Behavior: 2. Blue

BEHAVIOR:

KNOWN HISTORY:

Sage was brought in as a stray, there is no known information on her behavior history in a home environment.

Scratch history: On Monday 9/25 around 5:50pm, an adoption counselor opened the cubby door to Sage's kennel to provide some socialization. Sage was leaning in for pets and was friendly for a few minutes before she got overwhelmed and jumped away. As Sage jumped away, her back leg scratched Megan's forearm, breaking skin and leaving a scratch, approximately 1-1 1/2 inch long. The staff member closed the cubby door and cleaned the wound with water and soap.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:

10/01/23
At back of kennel, ears forward, pupils dilated and body tense. She wiggles her butt when I approach, then she catapults herself to the front of the kennel to play with my hands and greet me. She allows all petting while leaning in and raising her tail. She looks all around and raises her paws a few times but she does not commit fully to the swat or to playing with my hands. There's definitely potential there, but she is social and sweet. Needs a lot of play time!

EVALUATION:

ACTIVITY LEVEL:

Energetic

VOCAL:

Talkative

CHARACTER TYPE:

Bold

Social

Playful

Curious

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:

Very high energy level

Potential challenges comments:

Please see behavior flyer for more information.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:

Level 2

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:

Sage was at the front of her kennel as the assessor approached, body and face relaxed, pupils dilated and ears forward. Sage vocalized and reached out towards the assessor with soft paws when spoken to and she remained with her face pressed against the kennel door as the assessor began to open it. Sage allowed petting along her head and body while leaning in with energy and raising her tail. Sage remained calm when lifted and placed back down. Sage's pupils remained dilated for the duration of our interaction.

Sage interacts with the assessor, solicits attention, is easy to handle and tolerates all petting. This cat is suitable for any level of adopter experience. Due to a prior scratch incident, Sage must be made a level 2.

KNOWN HISTORY: Pepper was brought in by the owners neighbor and was surrendered on her behalf. Pepper has a bite history, the last bite occurred 3 weeks ago that drew blood and the owner went to urgent care for antibiotics. The neighbor called the owner and she stated that Pepper is declawed on his front paws and within the last 6 mos has become increasingly aggressive and will bite the owner and the other cat in the home without any warning.

Upon intake, Pepper was growling in the carrier and was laying tightly curled up in the corner of carrier with his face turned into the corner. When staff called his name he turned and hissed, he had dilatated eyes and was drooling. He was not handled.
EVALUATION:
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate
VOCAL: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: Social
Shy
Calm
Sweet
Affectionate
Curious
Timid
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES: New home adjustment period
Fearful
Declawed cat
Potential challenges comments: Due to Pepper starting out shy and fearful in the shelter, he may require a slow approach as he adjusts to his new home before showing his social and sweet personality.

Pepper's front paws are declawed.
A cat's claws are their first line of defense, so they’ll feel vulnerable without them. Cats are also more likely to bite after being declawed since they don’t have the opportunity to scratch as a warning anymore.

Pepper enjoys tuna and dry treats; he can be treat motivated to walk out of the kennel in order to reach around his body easier, pick him up, and transfer him into a carrier.

See behavior flyers for information.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: Level 2
RECOMMENDATIONS: Adult only home
Single-pet home
Recommendations comments: Reported to bite the owner and the other cat in the home without any warning.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY: Pepper used to be a shy, timid, and fearful cat but has now been social, sweet, and affectionate since his previous evaluation one month ago. He was sitting up at the front of the kennel focused on the assessor with a neutral body and wide eyes (mostly likely due to age/medical instead of fear). When spoken to and opening the door, he eagerly sniffs and accepts treats offered and head bunts for petting. Pepper hovers over the front entrance, leans in hard for cheek rubs, and raises his hips and tail in the air when stroking his body. The assessor uses more treats to coax him out of the kennel and explore the environment. During pick up, he remains calm and relaxed, curiously scans the surrounding, and allows petting all over when held for 5 seconds before tensing up and wiggling out of the assessor's arms. After placing Pepper back down, he continues to appreciate more treats, petting, and attention.

Pepper is a sweet and shy boy that requires a quiet, adult-only and single-pet home that understands he needs to be met where he is. When given the appropriate environment, he can be very sweet and loving and is curious and enjoys exploring. Pepper appreciates attention and petting but appeared to be moderately fearful or stressed in the shelter. He will likely need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that he go to a home with some cat experience preferred or at least be well counseled in fearful cat behavior.
