A note about play in dog training:

Play, when it’s done correctly, is one of the most powerful tools we have. It helps us build a clear communication system, teach impulse control, and create engagement, trust, and reliability that holds up outside of training sessions. Just because a dog will listen when you’re standing right in front of them with treats doesn’t mean they’ll listen when the picture changes.

Where you are, what you’re doing, and what’s happening around them all matter.

Practicing things like this is what teaches the dog to listen in different scenarios and builds real reliability.

Sadie wouldn’t even lay down for me a week ago, so I’ll admit even I was a little surprised when she stayed as the leaf blower came out.

The distraction wasn’t planned, but I figured I’d let it ride and see what she did.

She passed with flying colors.

This is exactly why I like teaching behaviors with limited distractions first. Make the expectations clear. Give the dog a chance to actually understand what you want. Then, when distractions show up later, they have something solid to fall back on.

People are always intrigued because Beau is constantly staring at me.

Engagement at this level is a learned behavior — it’s not natural. Yes, I truly believe Beau loves me a lot, but not so much that he would naturally stare at me all day long.

He does this because he’s working.

He’s an energetic, young dog who is always looking for the next thing to do. Without direction, that energy could easily turn into chewed-up couches, baseboards, kids’ toys, and so much more.

A lot of what people call a behavioral problem isn’t really a behavioral problem at all. It’s a dog that has no idea what it’s supposed to be doing. It doesn’t understand where its purpose lies because nobody has taught it.

That’s not the dog’s fault. That’s the human’s fault.

Yet people are incredibly quick to blame their dogs for problems they helped create by failing to give the dog enough structure, direction, and leadership.

Engagement like this has been built over years. Beau loves to work, and he’s always willing to look to me for the next task, game, or direction.

If your dog is constantly creating chaos in your house, you might need to spend a little less time looking at the dog and a little more time looking at yourself.

Meet Sadie.

Sadie came to Mosaic K9 about a week ago for Board & Train. Overall, she’s a great dog — always happy and ready to do something, especially if it involves being outside.

She has also shown some possessive behavior, especially around the space surrounding her favorite people. That has included barking, lunging, and nipping at guests in the past. The most recent incident involved jumping over her owner on the couch to nip at their girlfriend’s child.

While she’s here, we’ll be building a strong obedience foundation, testing that obedience around distractions, building impulse control, and putting her in situations where she has to learn how to listen even when there’s a lot going on around her.

The goal is pretty simple: send her home safer, more reliable, and better prepared to handle the situations that have caused problems in the past.

She’s already done a tremendous job during her first week. The barking and lunging toward the other dogs in the house and my daughter has already stopped.

Recall is one of the most important things you can teach your dog. Teach it with a leash first, and you’ll dramatically reduce the chances of having to say it more than once.

It takes a lot of repetition and clear communication to build a dog that reliably listens. A clear command, body language, leash pressure, marker words, rewards… they all have their place. Here, we were simply working on getting Lady to understand what “place” means.

I love this dog! Luna has come so far in such a short period of time. Not long ago, she hardly even knew her name, let alone how to control herself in new situations. She couldn’t even be around another dog without trying to start a fight.

Seeing where she’s at now is pretty incredible. Very proud of her!

It didn’t take Lady long to start getting comfortable on her cot. A bit of positive reinforcement for simply touching it, and next thing you know she was standing on it with all 4 paws. It’s important to be patient and not rush a dog into something they’re unsure of, but it’s equally important that they learn how to work through the unsure feeling. Good Job, Lady!
