Did you know that many heartworms are infected with a bacteria called Wolbachia, which further contributes to the inflammatory response in dogs?

When heartworms die, body pieces can lodge in the vasculature, obstructing blood flow to the lungs and causing scarring in the vessels supplying lung tissue.

Over time, this can lead to heart failure. Most dogs don't exhibit symptoms in the initial stages, but as the condition worsens, they may experience coughing, panting, exercise intolerance, and weight loss. 🐶

Providing year-round heartworm prevention is an important part of your pet’s health care plan. If you would like to discuss the various preventives, contact our team by calling , so we can determine what protocol would best fit you and your pet’s lifestyle.

Want to keep your pet happy and healthy? Exercise and mental stimulation are key! A quick walk or play session won't cut it, though.

Switch up your pet's routine by trying puzzle feeders, new toys, or playing scent games. Take your dog to an off-leash park or enroll in obedience classes to keep their minds engaged.

Your cat will appreciate additional climbing opportunities and prey-like toys to exercise their hunting instincts. Keeping your pet active and engaged will help them live their best life. Call 972-540-2220 to talk to your veterinarian for more ideas.

At ACCSR, we’ve been privately owned since 2002. One owner. One hospital. One team accountable to our clients, patients, staff, and community. ❤️

Lately there’s been a lot of discussion online about corporations buying veterinary practices. And yes… it’s happening rapidly. In fact, in McKinney, corporate ownership now makes up the majority of general practices.

That does NOT automatically mean corporate clinics are “bad.” There are many excellent veterinarians and support teams working inside those hospitals who care deeply about pets and their people. Most veterinarians, regardless of ownership structure, entered this profession because they genuinely want to help animals.

But ownership structure can affect the experience clients have.

Corporate systems may bring:
• frequent doctor turnover
• rotating relief veterinarians
• pressure for efficiency and production
• less appointment time for education and discussion
• less local decision-making

One of the greatest strengths of a privately owned hospital is consistency and accountability.

At ACCSR:
• your feedback goes directly to the owner
• your veterinarian helps shape hospital standards and protocols
• we prioritize relationship-based medicine
• we intentionally schedule longer appointments to allow time for questions, education, and individualized care
• our decisions are made here… not in another state or a corporate boardroom

Veterinary medicine has changed dramatically over the last 10–15 years. Costs have risen everywhere. Staffing, medications, equipment, diagnostics, rent, insurance, technology, and continuing education. That affects private and corporate hospitals alike.

So before assuming “poor outcome = poor care,” please remember something important:

Medicine is imperfect.
Pets age.
Cancer happens.
Kidneys fail.
Hearts fail.
And sometimes even excellent medicine cannot change the final outcome.

Compassionate veterinary care is not measured only by whether we can cure disease. Often it’s measured by honesty, education, comfort, advocacy, communication, and helping families navigate incredibly difficult decisions with love and dignity.

We are grateful every day that so many families continue choosing locally owned veterinary medicine. Thank you for trusting us with your pets, your worries, your celebrations, and your heartbreaks.

We spend big bucks on our pets, and those dollars are drawing private equity firms to jump into veterinary services.

Today we’re celebrating national Rescue Dog Day and all rescue pets — and of course Minnow understood the assignment. 💛🐾

Minnow came to me through Rescue Row after a rough start in life, and despite being born with a cleft lip and palate, she has grown into the happiest, wiggliest little chaos potato imaginable. Rescue pets may not always start with a perfect story, but they are absolutely capable of perfect love.

Animal Care Center at Stonebridge Ranch offers a complimentary initial exam for newly adopted pets from a registered rescue organization within 30 days of adoption.

Because every rescue deserves a great beginning. 🐶✨

Did you know your pet can transmit rabies to you?

This dangerous disease has no cure and can be life-threatening. Transmission can occur if your pet bites you, or their saliva enters an open wound. Signs in humans include headache, fever, mental confusion, and difficulty swallowing.

Vaccinating your pet ensures they can’t spread this deadly disease to you and your family.
