The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office Animal Shelter is in place to accept stray, abandoned and neglected domesticated animals from the public. Due to the high population of these animals, the shelter does not take in owner surrenders. After the 4 business day hold required by State law, the Staff evaluates the temperament and health of the animals not returned to their owners. Cats are felv/fiv te

sted and dogs are temperament tested. If an animal fails its temperament test (for food, dog, or people aggression), or its health evaluation, the Shelter either has the animal humanely put to sleep OR the rescue coordinators for the Shelter look for every possible avenue in and out of the County to save its life. All animals who pass all the tests are put up for adoption. Before being released to a new owner, every dog and cat is neutered or spayed.

Life is better with friends!

We love the new mural the volunteers painted and hung above the garden! Scooter was happy to be the perfect model to show off the mural. He is an affectionate, playful, intelligent 55 pound one year old. Scooter is available for foster or adoption.

Lovely Charm has some major fans amongst the volunteers! She is popular for her easy walking style and definitely lives up to her name Charm. She has recently entertained her handlers by picking and eating the wild strawberries in the field! We’ve definitely had some blackberry-pickers in the ranks before, but strawberry picking is a new one. Charm likes all kinds of toys and is able to entertain herself by tossing them around. She is pretty quiet in the kennel where some of our Northern breeds in the past have had more to say.

A volunteer says: “She is amazingly calm for a Husky. She has a gentle walk, yet has enthusiasm for getting out. Once she knows you, she will come in for affection. She seems to enjoy being brushed as well. She is definitely treat motivated so she has the potential to further her obedience skills. She knows the sit command very well.”

Charm is 5 years old, weighs 50 pounds, and is spayed, microchipped, current on vaccinations and tested for heartworm. If you’ve been looking for that easy walker that will turn peoples’ heads with her beauty as you walk by, come check out Charm! She is available for foster or adoption.

People frequently ask us if there are any older dogs available. Everyone say hello to Lewis! Read on to learn about what a volunteer had to say about him:

“Lewis is quite the character. I think that he will make a wonderful companion for someone! He’s happy to entertain himself; if you offer him a game of fetch, or a short jog, or a walk, he'll give you a great big doggo smile and go along with you. Lewis is very intelligent and likes to use his nose, so if anyone wants to do scent work or barn hunt, I think he would enjoy either one. He is food and toy driven. He’ll open the toy chest and show you which toy he prefers. On top of all that wonderfulness, he makes me laugh. Who doesn't like a guy who makes you laugh?”

Lewis is goofy, talkative, and ready to get out of the shelter and into a home! He is 8 years old, weighs 46 pounds, is neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, and heartworm negative. Lewis is available for foster or adoption.

Are you looking for a little adventure buddy? Clementine might be your gal!

She is all about fun and cuddles. She likes to go exploring on her walks and loves the water (check out the comment section for video!). She is eager to learn and has a fantastic Sit Stay. We could see her being a lot of fun to teach tricks to. When she gets excited she stands on her hind legs reaching out with her front paws; she could be a circus dog! Clementine does great around other dogs.

Clementine is an incredibly sweet dog. She is 2 years old, weighs 30 pounds, is spayed, microchipped, vaccinated, and heartworm negative. Contact the shelter if you’d like to foster or adopt her!

Thank you everyone for coming to the Saturday adoption event and for all the support leading up to it! Six cats and nine dogs have found new homes from the event!

Cats: Tito, Debbie, Laila, Mia, Yeti, and Finch

Dogs: Fergie, Apple, Oreo, Hope, Laguna, Wren, Serge, Bagel, and Xena

It was truly a fabulous day to see all the smiling faces! The wonderful teamwork of Shelter Staff, Volunteers, and Redwood Pals Rescue made the event run smoothly!

We have had a lot of people ask us about if our sweetest boys Batman and Ketchup have found homes. Both are still available for adoption; reach out if you’d like to know more about them!

Ketchup is excited for today!

"Ketchup is going to be such a great companion for somebody! He loves to just be where we are and will happily hang out with us whether it's on the couch, going for a ride, or working on projects in the yard.
While Ketchup is blind, it didn't take him long to learn to navigate the stairs to our yard, where the water bowl is, and most importantly: where the comfy dog beds and couch are. He has gotten along really great with our three dogs as well as our cat, and often can be found laying next to one of them. His happy tail wags when we tuck him in with a blanket on the couch are just too cute!" ~Foster

These two photos were taken almost exactly 6 months apart. The photo on the left is Batman at 6 months old and the photo on the right is him at a year old.

Batman has now spent half his young life at the shelter. He is the sweetest boy and a volunteer favorite to spend time with. Please search the page for Batman to see all the adventures he has been on! He is cuddly, smart, fun, and social with other dogs. And did we mention handsome!

We’re hoping tomorrow is his day to find a loving home!

Saturday June 6th all adoptions are free! Make sure to send in an application in advance to make it easier to see an animal tomorrow.

Tomorrow is the day all adoption fees are covered thanks to the ASPCA in partnership with CalAnimals for the third annual California Adopt-A-Pet Day!

Scooby, Sandstorm, Dean, and Dozer are just a few dogs that’ll be available to meet! To see all the animals available go to https://24petconnect.com/hmco.

The shelter will be open from 10-4. If you are looking to adopt a dog make sure to bring your own dog (or any that live on the property) with you to meet the potential new family member. We highly recommend sending in an application ahead of time; especially if you rent so staff are able to connect with your landlord. An approved application is needed before meeting any animals.
