Retail Rescue is the entire reason the USDA shut down imports from other countries. They brought in diseases. Diseases that killed hundreds of dogs.

Rescue means you don’t pay for the dog. It comes free and you take on the financial burden of caring for the dog.
Adopt from your local animal shelter.

Shop means purchasing a puppy from an ethical responsible breeder. Not all breeders are created equal.

Responsible breeders support breed rescues. Responsible breeders take the puppies the produce back at any age for any reason and have contracts stating as much.

We need to stop demonizing good breeders.

Retail Rescue diseases:
Asian Strain Canine Distemper (CDV): Imported dogs, particularly from overseas rescues, have introduced new strains of distemper not previously reported in North America.
Mystery Respiratory Illness: A persistent canine infectious respiratory disease (CIRD) that resists standard treatments, causing chronic coughing and rapid pneumonia, has been reported across multiple U.S. states.
Strep Zoo (Streptococcus zooepidemicus): A severe, often fatal, bacteria causing pneumonia, typically seen in farm animals, which has been surfacing in crowded rescue environments.
Canine Influenza (H3N2): Though not brand new, this virus often spreads through rescue networks, causing serious outbreaks among dogs at social events, boarding, or daycare.
Leptospirosis Spike: While not strictly from imports, cases are increasing, and this bacteria can be carried by rescued dogs, causing severe kidney or liver damage.

So many people don’t understand that when we say “adopt or shop responsibly”, the responsibly part applies to adopting too.

Purchasing dogs at mill auction is not rescue.
Purchasing dogs at mill auction is directly contributing to the vicious cycle allowing dogs to continuously be bred unethically.
This is retail rescue and it’s part of the problem.

Please follow the links and say no to this bill’s wording. Ask your representatives to change the wording.

The current wording risks Field trials and training. Help protect our dogs.

There is a last minute addendum to the Farm Bill that would ban the use of live animals being used for dog training. Obviously, an issue for those of us who participate in hunt tests, field trials, or hunt/train at sporting clubs.

Please consider the filling out the attached letter from Sportsman’s Alliance (link in comments). Once you add your zip code, it will populate with your Senator’s information. Hopefully, the language can be amended in the Senate.

This bill will be detrimental to all hunters, trainers, and AKC trials, not just Greyhounds.
Remember even if your Golden Retriever is a couch Prince or Princess aka a beloved member of the family, they are according to the AKC standard “Primarily a hunting dog”.

Call or email your representative and tell them to take out “live lures” and “open Field coursing” it affects so many other aspects of hunting and training. This may also affect AKC Hunt tests and Field trials, AKC Lure coursing, and FastCat which use a plastic bag as a lure, but have open fields for the test.

Protect hunting and our sports and don’t allow them to use vague wording.

Copied from another breeder:

Let’s get one thing straight:
We NEED ethical dog breeders.
Not backyard breeders.
Not puppy mills.
Not “oops litters.”
Ethical. Responsible. Passionate. Breeders.

Because the truth is this:

Good breeders don’t just produce puppies — they protect entire breeds.
They’re the reason we still have healthy working dogs, therapy dogs, sport dogs, and family companions with predictable temperaments and solid genetics.

Good breeders raise puppies like they’re staying forever.
Socialization, early exposure, enrichment, confidence-building…
None of that is “extra.” It’s STANDARD.

Good breeders take dogs back, every time.
For life.
No questions. No judgment.
Because their puppies NEVER end up in shelters, ever.

Good breeders breed for preservation, for improvement, and for LOVE.

And here’s the part people don’t want to admit:
Without ethical breeders, we’d lose the breeds we depend on and adore.
Service dog lines.
Duty-driven working breeds.
Family-safe temperaments.
Sound structure.
Predictability.
Purpose.
History.

Shelters are full because of irresponsible breeding and irresponsible owners—
not ethical breeding or ethical breeders.

So next time someone says,
“Adopt Don’t Shop”
remind them:
You can support shelters/rescues AND still value and support ethical breeders.

Both matter.
Both play crucial roles.
Both are needed.
Because the breeders doing it right?
They’re the ones keeping dogs healthy, stable, and loved for generations to come.
