Another Alert!

Update on the stolen litter: all 10 puppies have been sold.

Say a prayer, light a candle, send good juju into the universe, manifest their return — whatever practice you choose. My heart breaks for everyone - the breeder, the buyers, and the poor momma borzoi.

This is Sandra’s post/appeal to the innocent puppy buyers on the private buy/sell group on Craig’s List.

“Sold on Cookeville TN Craigslist"

Someone stole 10 of my dog's 5 week old puppies from my fenced yard behind my house. A police report was filed yesterday morning with WCSD. Starting late yesterday the thieves put them on Craigs List Cookeville and sold them. I am putting this out there if you bought a 5 week old puppy off Craigslist in the last 24 hours and it looks like one of these please contact me I will buy it back. They aren't old enough to be away from their mom. I don't want anyone to have anymore pain and heartache. Please please return my puppies, do the right thing. ⚖️ THE PEOPLE vs. RESPONSIBLE BREEDERS
Now appearing in the Court of Facebook, where feelings are evidence, memes are research and the loudest person automatically becomes an expert.

Attorney: State your occupation.

Breeder: Preservation breeder.

Attorney: So—you breed puppies for money?

Breeder: Absolutely. I recently spent $4,000 to produce $3,000 worth of puppies. I’ll be ordering my yacht as soon as I finish scrubbing diarrhea off the laundry-room wall.

Attorney: Shelters are overflowing because people like you keep producing dogs!

Breeder: Of course. My health-tested puppies—sold with lifetime support and a return-to-breeder agreement—personally drove themselves to every shelter in America.

Meanwhile, Billy Bob’s fourth accidental litter is listed online beside a used refrigerator, but apparently he’s just an innocent victim of unfenced love.

Attorney: Everyone should stop shopping and adopt mutts!

Breeder: Brilliant. Let’s stop deliberately breeding healthy dogs to written standards and allow genetics to operate like an unsupervised trailer-park reunion.

Attorney: Purebred dogs aren’t necessary.

Breeder: Neither is Wi-Fi, but I bet you’d start swinging a folding chair if yours disappeared.

Attorney: Breed standards are just vanity.

Breeder: Yes, those silly little details like structure, sound movement, predictable size, stable temperament and the ability to perform the job the breed was created to do. Completely useless—until your “small, calm apartment dog” reaches 87 pounds, eats the drywall and attempts to herd the upstairs neighbors.

Attorney: Mixed-breed dogs make wonderful pets!

Breeder: They absolutely can. Nobody said otherwise. But if every responsible breeder quits, eventually every dog becomes a brown mystery named Buddy.

Buddy’s DNA results will say 6% Chihuahua, 14% Husky, 20% livestock guardian, 9% terrier and 51% “close the gate and pray.”

Attorney: If everyone adopted, shelters would eventually be empty.

Breeder: Wonderful! And after responsible breeders are gone, where will future dogs come from?

Attorney: Shelters.

Breeder: And where will shelters get them?

Attorney: From people who breed dogs.

Breeder: So your master plan requires people to keep breeding dogs irresponsibly so you’ll have dogs to rescue—while attacking the people breeding them responsibly?

Attorney: That’s not what I said.

Breeder: It’s exactly what you said. You just wrapped it in a bumper sticker and hoped nobody would apply basic arithmetic.

Attorney: Responsible breeders should simply stop.

Breeder: Then say goodbye to predictable breeds. No more carefully preserved Labradors, Poodles, German Shepherds, Chinese Cresteds or hundreds of other breeds developed for specific purposes.

Attorney: We’ll still have dogs.

Breeder: Certainly. We’ll have Buddy—part hound, part cattle dog, part sofa assassin and entirely capable of clearing a six-foot fence before your morning coffee.

Attorney: So you hate rescue dogs?

Breeder: No. That tired accusation is what people use when their argument has collapsed like a discount lawn chair at a family reunion.

Rescue a dog. Purchase from a responsible breeder. Do both. Just stop pretending one good choice requires publicly flogging the other.

Attorney: I’m offended.

Breeder: Being offended isn’t the same as being correct. It just means the truth arrived without bubble wrap.

⚖️ CASE DISMISSED

Reason: The prosecution presented one slogan, three memes, no understanding of genetics and a halo tilted so far sideways it nearly struck the court reporter.

Adopt responsibly. Shop responsibly. Commit for life.

And please stop acting like purebred dogs grow wild behind the shelter and are harvested every spring by rescue fairies. 😂🐾

No English, white, or Cream. Straight Scottish.

The most popular family dog in the world is not American and it is not English. It was made in a Highland glen by a Scottish laird who wanted a better gun dog. 🐕

The place is Guisachan, in Strathglass in Inverness shire, west of Beauly. The man was Dudley Marjoribanks, later Lord Tweedmouth. In 1868 he mated a yellow wavy coated retriever called Nous to a Tweed Water Spaniel called Belle, a breed out of the Scottish Borders that no longer exists. The four yellow puppies from that litter are the foundation of every golden retriever alive today.

We know this with unusual certainty because Tweedmouth kept meticulous records in his own hand, and his stud books survive. There is no folklore here and no guesswork. There is a Scottish notebook.

What he was breeding for tells you a great deal about the country itself. He needed a dog that could work all day on rough Highland ground, mark a bird falling into deep heather or cold water, go in without hesitation, and bring it back undamaged and willingly. Not a dog that had to be forced. A dog that wanted to please. That last quality is the one he selected for hardest, and it is the reason the breed ended up in millions of family homes rather than only out on the hill. 🌾

Guisachan House is a roofless ruin now, standing quietly among the trees with the glen going on around it exactly as it always did. Every few years hundreds of golden retrievers and their owners come from all over the world and gather in front of that ruin together, and the sound of it carries right down the strath.

There is something very Scottish in the whole story. A thing made carefully, for hard practical work, in a place most people have never heard of, which then went out into the world and was loved everywhere it landed.

If there is a golden lying at your feet as you read this, they came from a glen. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Stop blaming Breeders when the problem is irresponsible owners.
Get your puppy or dog from a responsible ethical preservation breeder.

Can we stop pretending “Adopt, Don’t Shop” is some morally superior statement?

Because honestly… it may sound cute on a bumper sticker, but it ignores the bigger problem.

The issue isn’t ethical breeders preserving good genetics, sound temperaments, working ability, health-tested lines, and generations of intentional pairing.

The issue is irresponsible humans.

Most dogs sitting in shelters didn’t put themselves there.

Someone bought or adopted a dog they had no business owning.
Someone didn’t train it.
Someone didn’t contain it.
Someone didn’t commit.
Someone treated a living creature like a temporary hobby instead of a lifelong responsibility.

That is not the fault of responsible breeders.

Good breeders are not the enemy. Good breeders are the reason good lines survive. They are the ones protecting health, temperament, structure, purpose, and predictability. They are the ones asking questions, keeping contracts, taking dogs back, and caring deeply about where their puppies go.

We cannot let the best genetics disappear because society wants to shame every person who chooses a well-bred dog.

Adopt if your heart leads you there.
Buy from an ethical breeder if that is right for your family.

But how about we start saying the quiet part louder:

Because the real problem was never “shopping.”

It was people failing the dogs they promised to love.
