Recently, we had a client who had been exposed to a bat that was found on the ground during daylight hours. We humanely euthanized it, sent if for testing, and it came back positive for Rabies.
Rabies is in the wildlife in our area!
Today, a client called who found a raccoon that was staggering and acting drunk in their backyard. This behavior is consistent with Rabies!
If you encounter an animal that you suspect has Rabies, stay away and call animal control and the health department. Make sure your animals (including horses) are up to date on their Rabies vaccinations.
If you must immobilize the animal, please do not damage the head, as they need the head to test for Rabies. If you have any exposure to the animal, including physical contact or saliva/bodily fluids, the health department will determine whether you need to undergo prophylactic treatment.
