🍂 Is your pet scratching more this fall?
Cooler weather doesn’t mean allergy season is over! At Mayo Town and Country Animal Hospital, we’re seeing pets affected by fall allergens that can leave dogs and cats itchy, uncomfortable, or dealing with respiratory irritation.
Common fall triggers include:*Ragw**d and other w**d pollens
• Mold spores from damp leaves and decaying plants
• Dust and dust mites (especially when the heat first comes on)
What it often looks like in pets (it doesn’t always look like human allergies):*Excessive paw licking or chewing
• Face rubbing or head shaking
• Red, irritated skin or recurrent ear infections
• Sneezing, watery eyes, or increased coughing (especially in pets with asthma or bronchitis)
Not every itch is an allergy—fleas, skin infections, or other issues can look similar. If your pet is uncomfortable, a quick check with our team at Mayo Town and Country Animal Hospital can help identify the cause and get them relief faster.
Quick tips while you wait for your appointment:*Wipe paws after walks
• Rinse or bathe as recommended by your veterinarian to reduce allergens on the coat
• Keep bedding washed and vacuum regularly
Is your pet dealing with fall itching or sniffles? Give Mayo Town and Country Animal Hospital a call to schedule a visit—386-294-5000-we’re here to help them feel their best this season! 🐾

Laser Therapy for Pets: Gentle Support for Pain & Healing

We offer therapeutic laser therapy (photobiomodulation)—a safe, non-invasive treatment that uses targeted light to help reduce pain and inflammation, improve circulation, and support your pet’s natural healing.
It can be especially helpful for:
• Arthritis and joint pain
• Post-surgical recovery
• Muscle, tendon, or ligament injuries
• Chronic wounds or inflammation
Most pets relax during short sessions (often just a few minutes). No sedation is needed, and side effects are rare when performed by trained staff.
Laser therapy works well alongside other treatments and can be a great option for pets who need extra comfort or can’t take certain medications.
Curious if it’s right for your pet? Contact us to learn more or schedule a consultation. We’re here to help them feel better! 🐾🐕🐈

Did you know.... a small, feathered warrior helped save the soul of our nation?
Meet Cher Ami — the legendary homing pigeon of World War I.
In October 1918, during the brutal Meuse-Argonne Offensive, Major Charles Whittlesey and over 500 American soldiers of the “Lost Battalion” were trapped behind enemy lines, surrounded by German forces, and under friendly fire. With no other way to communicate, they sent Cher Ami with a desperate message tied to her leg:
“We are along the road parallel to 276.4. Our own artillery is dropping a barrage right on us. For heaven’s sake stop it.”
German bullets tore through the sky. Cher Ami was hit — shot through the chest, blinded in one eye, and left with only one leg. But this brave little pigeon didn’t stop. She flew 25 miles in 25 minutes through smoke, gas, and gunfire, delivering the message that saved 194 American lives.
Her heroism earned her the French Croix de Guerre with Palm. Today, her preserved body stands proudly at the Smithsonian Institution as a symbol of courage, loyalty, and the unbreakable American spirit.
On America’s 250th birthday, we celebrate not only our Declaration of Independence, but every brave heart — human or winged — that fought to keep this experiment in liberty alive.
Thank you, Cher Ami. You showed the world that even the smallest among us can change history. 🕊️❤️

Happy 250th Birthday America🇺🇸🐶! To celebrate, Mayo Town & Country Animal Hospital brings you another " Did you know..." moment:
Did you know...Fala: President FDR’s Famous Dog Who Stole America’s Heart?! 🐶
(Yes, it’s Fala – not Nala! The legendary Scottish Terrier who became a national icon.)
Fala was born on April 7, 1940. FDR’s distant cousin Margaret “Daisy” Suckley gave the lively black Scottish Terrier puppy to the President as a gift. Originally named Big Boy, FDR renamed him Murray the Outlaw of Falahill after a Scottish ancestor — but everyone called him Fala.
He quickly became more than a pet. Fala was Franklin D. Roosevelt’s constant companion during some of the most challenging years in American history. He slept in a special chair by the President’s bed, got a bone every morning with FDR’s breakfast tray, and only the President was allowed to feed him (he was a notorious beggar!).
Fala traveled everywhere with Roosevelt — by train, car, and boat. He even met Winston Churchill and helped promote the War Dog Fund during World War II.
Fala was so popular that he received thousands of fan letters from people and even other animals across the country! He had his own secretary (Margaret Suckley) appointed to answer all his mail. One letter came from a poodle named Abigail who scolded Fala for chasing a skunk!
Fala’s biggest moment came in the 1944 presidential campaign. Republicans spread a false story claiming FDR had accidentally left his dog behind in the Aleutian Islands and spent millions of taxpayer dollars to send a destroyer to rescue him.
President Roosevelt fired back in his famous “Fala Speech” to the Teamsters Union:
“These Republican leaders have not been content with attacks on me, or my wife, or on my sons. No, not content with that, they now include my little dog, Fala. Well, of course, I don’t resent attacks, and my family doesn’t resent attacks, but Fala does resent them!”
The crowd loved it. The speech helped defend FDR’s campaign and showed the nation just how beloved this little dog had become.
After FDR’s death in 1945, Fala lived with Eleanor Roosevelt until he passed away in 1952 at age 12. He was buried near the President at the family home in Hyde Park, New York. Today, a statue of Fala stands beside FDR at the Roosevelt Memorial in Washington, D.C. — the only presidential pet so honored.
Fala brought joy, loyalty, and a touch of normalcy to the White House during tough times. A true reminder that even the most powerful leaders need a faithful four-legged friend.

Did you know...
Long before he became the first President of the United States, George Washington was already earning another title—the Father of the Foxhound in America.

Washington was one of the nation’s earliest and most influential foxhound breeders. At his Mount Vernon estate, he carefully developed his hunting pack by crossing English hounds with French hounds gifted to him by the Marquis de Lafayette. His detailed breeding records and dedication to improving the breed helped shape what would eventually become the American Foxhound.

His passion for foxhounds reflected the same qualities he brought to leadership—patience, discipline, careful planning, and a commitment to excellence. While history remembers him as the “Father of Our Country,” dog enthusiasts also recognize his lasting impact on one of America’s oldest and most iconic dog breeds.

George Washington’s legacy extends far beyond politics—it also lives on in the loyal, determined, and athletic American Foxhound. 🇺🇸🐶
