Tonight was a two for one kinda night! Homeowner had two baby rattlesnakes in their garage 😳

Now, before everyone starts with the, “when there is one, there is more,” or, “there may be a den nearby!” False and false. Rattlesnakes do not travel together and mother rattlers do not have “mommy love” for their babies. They drop them and go! That all being said, do rattlesnakes happen to be in the same area due to a common food source? Yes!

In this case, the house has a cornfield behind them, and the farmers have been tilling the land. Our theory is that mom had her babies in the homeowner’s garage, and due to rodents being in the area and there being items in the garage, there is a food source and shelter.

We are VERY thankful to the homeowner for reaching out for us to relocate!

***TRIGGER WARNING POST: VIDEO IN COMMENTS***

So, it finally happened. Unfortunately, the rattler I relocated ended up regurgitating its meal. When I got the call, he was already in strike mode and rattling. I quickly got him in my bucket, and within a few minutes he was calm again. I found a place where there was a water and food source, as well as shade. Instead of a quick release, I stayed and waited for him to come out on his own and what I had hoped was relaxed. In the first video in the comments, you can see he kept opening and closing his mouth. That should have been my queue that he wasn’t feeling right. In the second video, he regurgitates his food 😔 (Do not watch if you get squeamish.). I again wait for him to calm a little before I use my hook to slowly move him out of the bucket.

The reason I hate this is when snakes do this, it hurts them and takes a lot of their energy making them vulnerable to predators. It will take them a bit to gain that energy before they eat again. As you can tell with him, it was a large rat.

I share this for educational purposes so you understand that they do serve a purpose. When left alone, these guys will go about their way if there is not a food source.

I forgot to post this little one I relocated on my way home from work yesterday. It was curled up under the bathroom sink of a neighborhood pool.

As you can see, once released it went back to being curled up 💕

Lunch break, relocation! Beautiful rattlesnake that was hiding out under the homeowner’s shed due to a nest a little bunnies that were there as well.

Relocated to a bridge area, where there is plenty of shade, water, and other rodents it can have away from the neighborhood.
