🐾 Why Do Dogs Eat Grass?
A little grass eating can be completely normal. Dogs may nibble grass because they like the taste, want extra fiber, are bored, or are simply following a natural foraging behavior.
But some dogs eat grass because they feel nauseated or have stomach discomfort. We especially pay attention when grass eating is sudden, excessive, frantic, or happens along with vomiting, poor appetite, diarrhea, weight loss, lip licking, gulping, or abdominal pain.
Possible medical reasons can include gastritis or reflux, intestinal parasites, pancreatitis, food intolerance, inflammatory bowel disease, delayed stomach emptying, or other gastrointestinal problems.
The key difference is this:
Occasional grazing is usually harmless. Compulsive grass eating is not normal and deserves a closer look.
And as this surgical case shows, eating a large amount of grass can even form a dense mass that causes a serious gastrointestinal obstruction requiring surgery.
If your dog suddenly starts eating large amounts of grass or develops vomiting, appetite changes, diarrhea, or discomfort, give us a call.
