Working Gardens

Working Gardens We are a sustainable nursery and specialize in native woodlands, spring ephemerals and shade plants. No chemicals and we use organic methods.

Open since 2007
I post events for my sales but other times are by appointment. Even 15 min notice works for me. A small nursery featuring 100+ native perennial and woodlands plants. We use no pesticides and only organic methods. All plants are field grown on property. We have 100-200 varieties with 80-90% being native and Ohio native is a focus. Typically i put 75-100 varieties on the sales floor

each year. I also supply the Stark Parks Native plant sale each spring. See the Photo section of my page for photos of native and non native offerings. I can also offer large mature plants bare root and wholesale. Consultations are available. We now do everything by appointment. You can preorder for pickup as well. I'll have lists posted in early spring and my website will have info on the plants (coming soon)
In the pre Covid times Nursery Sales were weekends starting late April through mid May with Hours: Friday 10am-7pm and Saturday 10am-4pm.

When you’re trying to ID Dames Rocket VS Phlox just count the letters and the petals should match. 5 For Phlox ;)

Those pretty flowers aren’t friends :( They aren’t Phlox. They are Dames Rockets. An invasive. They have four petals while phlox has 5. Just remember phlox and it’s got 5 letters/petals and you’re good to ID them.

I pull them out post flower and compost in a spot i can keep them from reseeding. The trash can works too.

I’ve added a new plant this year! Sweet Grass -Anthoxanthum hirtum. My plan is to get an area of it going and be able to offer the grass as braids (looks at Andee lol).
It likes mositure and is aggressive so i’m creating an area it can run in. The natural range of Sweet Grass is Greenland to Alaska, south to New Jersey, Ohio, Iowa and Arizona.
Its natural habitat is wetlands, prairies, and savannas in wet to medium moisture soils. Though Sweet Grass prefers rich, moist soils, it will grow in almost any soil that receives a minimum of a half day of sun. Sandy, well-drained sites will require mulch and watering during times of low rainfall. Add compost to sand or clay soils. The preferred pH range is 6 to 8

The particular problem with these pesticides is that both of them contain toxic PFAS, short for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. PFAS are more colloquially known as “forever chemicals,” because that pretty much describes how long they linger in the environment. While they don’t remain in the body quite as persistently, according to a 2020 study in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, PFAS are present in the blood serum of 98% of Americans tested. The chemicals do get purged, principally in urine, but continued environmental exposure can steadily replace what has been eliminated.

PFAS have been linked by the EPA itself to an increased risk of a host of health effects, including decreased fertility, hypertension in pregnant people, increased risk of certain cancers (especially kidney cancer), developmental delays in children, hormonal irregularities, elevated cholesterol, reduced effectiveness of the immune system, and more.

The dangerous 'forever chemicals' could be causing still more contamination of crops.
