🚨 BREAKING MEWS: Our cat food shelves are looking a little… cat-astrophic. 🐱

Our community pet food bank helps local families keep their beloved pets fed and by their sides, but right now, we’re running low on dry cat food!

Although the shelter will be closed this weekend, donations can be left outside our adoption lobby. Our staff will still be here caring for the animals and will regularly bring donations inside.

How has this adorable little man not been adopted yet??

Barracuda (yes our name theme is fish this month) is a 10 week old mixed breed pup who would love to spend this holiday weekend with his new family!

He has been living in a foster home and working on crate training, housebreaking and general puppy manners. He plays wonderfully with his big foster sisters and even uses them as a step stool to get up on the couch!

Barracuda doesn't love going in his crate, but he settles quickly and will sleep quietly in there all night, although he would much prefer to sleep in bed with you!

The shelter is open from 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Stop in Tuesday and meet him! 💙

What you are looking at is 1.24 pounds of severely matted fur removed from one cat.

That matting accounted for approximately 18% of the cat's total body weight. For perspective, that would be comparable to a 150-pound person carrying around a 30-pound weight on their body 24 hours a day.

Today, Ingham County Animal Control & Shelter received a call from a local veterinary hospital after a cat was brought to the clinic for boarding. The cat was so severely matted that it was unable to walk normally.

Due to the severity of the cat's condition, the veterinary team made the decision to humanely euthanize the cat. Our Animal Control Officers responded to the clinic and retrieved the cat so the circumstances could be documented and evidence collected as part of an animal neglect investigation.

Our staff responds to cases of animal neglect and cruelty regularly. Even with that experience, no one at our agency has encountered a cat with matting this severe.

Severe matting is not simply a cosmetic issue. Mats can pull painfully on an animal's skin, restrict movement, conceal wounds and infections, trap urine and f***s, and significantly impact an animal's quality of life.

This did not happen overnight.

Pet owners have a responsibility to provide their animals with the basic care necessary to keep them healthy and free from unnecessary suffering. If you are unable to safely maintain your pet's coat, please seek assistance from a veterinarian or professional groomer before it reaches a crisis point.

An animal neglect investigation is underway. Charges will be requested, and our report and supporting evidence will be forwarded to the Ingham County Prosecutor's Office for review.

🎨 THE NOSE KNOWS! 👃🐾

Did you guess correctly?!

The very boopable nose from yesterday’s mystery portrait belongs to… CHOO CHOO! 🚂❤️

Our incredibly talented volunteer, Ricardo Guimaraes, has worked his magic again, turning our sweet 1-year-old Choo Choo into a one-of-a-kind work of art.

And there’s something pretty special about seeing this particular pup on canvas.

Choo Choo came to us after spending time on the run and ultimately having to be trapped. We believe he had likely been abandoned, and when he first arrived, he was frightened, unsure and understandably hesitant to trust the people around him.

Fast forward to today and… well, his foster might describe him a little differently. 😂

Choo Choo is energetic, making great progress with his confidence around men and, perhaps most importantly, has become VERY clingy and LOVES to cuddle. ❤️

The scared dog who once worked so hard to avoid people now actively seeks them out for affection. That's a masterpiece all its own.

And just like Pong’s portrait, this painting has a future home waiting for it! When Choo Choo finds his forever family, Ricardo’s original painting will go home with him as a special keepsake of just how far he’s come. 🎨

So if you’ve been looking for an energetic best friend, professional cuddler AND original piece of artwork for your home…
