Shedding for wild Emerald Tree Boas happens in the canopy, on whatever perch surfaces are available, in the humidity and temperature conditions of the South American jungle.

The pre-shed period begins when the lymphatic fluid that separates the old skin layer from the new one starts to accumulate underneath. This fluid is what produces the opaque, blue-tinted appearance of the eyes and the dull quality of the skin during the pre shed phase. The ETB's heat pit function and visual acuity are partially compromised during this period, which is why feeding attempts may fail during this time and why the animal becomes less responsive to disturbance than usual; or more defensive.

When conditions are right the animal uses available perch texture and vegetation to work the old skin off, typically starting from the head and working toward the tail in a single continuous piece. The surface texture of whatever the animal is resting on is what gives the ventral scales purchase to grip and pull against. In a captive enclosure that means perch texture is as much a shedding tool as it is a resting surface. An animal that consistently produces incomplete sheds on a smooth perch may simply not have adequate surface texture to work against rather than having a humidity or husbandry problem.

Parting with our spare male breeder beaded lizard. This dude is huge! Great eater on both rodents and eggs. We prefer local pickup only with this dude as I don’t want to deal with the headache of shipping via delta cargo. Please do your research as this species is venomous and requires a large habitat. Pm for more information on this handsome dragon.
