🐷 Do pigs have fur? Not exactly! 🐖

Pigs have bristly hair, not fur. It's coarser and sparser than a fluffy coat, and it can range from almost bare to surprisingly thick, depending on the breed. 🌾

Every pig is a little different. Some breeds, like Mangalitsas, grow a woolly coat. Others have fine, sparse hair you can barely see. Pigs in colder climates grow thicker coats, then shed as the weather warms up. ☀️ At Sunrise, we put out lots of straw for the pigs to burrow into, like a thick hairy coat, to keep them warm!

And that thin hair means sensitive skin. 🌞 Pigs sunburn easily, and they can't sweat to cool off. That's why they love a good wallow! Mud works as:
✔️ Sunscreen 🧴
✔️ Bug repellent 🪰
✔️ Air conditioning ❄️

So the next time you see a pig covered in mud, that's not a mess, that's smart self-care. 💚

🐄 Did you know cows are talkers?

Cows have a whole vocabulary, and every sound means something:

Moo — The classic. Cows moo to call out to herd mates, ask for food, or say "where is everybody?"

Low, quiet murmurs — Mama cows use soft, low-pitched sounds to talk to their calves, and calves recognize their mothers' voices.

Bellowing — Louder and more urgent. It can signal distress, separation from a friend, or frustration.

Snorts and huffs — A cow's way of saying "I see you, and I'm not sure about this."

Research shows cows even have individual "voices" and form close friendships. They get stressed when separated from their best buddies. 💛

Here at Sunrise Sanctuary, we hear it all, from happy greetings at feeding time to gentle conversations in the pasture, and every sound reminds us that each animal has a story to tell. 🌾
