As it looks like this nasty storm is heading our way, we want to take a moment to remind everyone to be prepared. We may not know exactly what this storm will bring yet, but it is always better to be prepared than caught off guard.
• Please do NOT leave your dogs outside. Even a garage is better than keeping them outside in severe weather. High winds, heavy rain, flying debris, flooding, and frightened pets can turn dangerous very quickly.
• Bring outdoor pets inside before the weather gets bad. Don’t wait until the storm is already here.
• Check your gates, fences, and latches. Wind and storms can damage them or blow gates open, creating an easy escape route for a scared dog.
• Make sure collars and ID tags are on and secure. If your dog is microchipped, make sure your contact information is current.
• Keep leashes handy. Even the most reliable dog can panic and bolt when thunder, wind, or other unfamiliar noises start.
• If your dog has storm anxiety, create a quiet, comfortable space inside. A crate, interior room, blankets, calming music, or white noise can help make the storm a little less scary.
• Have food, medications, water, and other necessary supplies on hand in case you lose power or need to shelter in place.
• If your dog requires medication, make sure you have enough before the weather arrives.
• Never leave a pet chained, tethered, or confined outdoors during severe weather.
Most importantly, please bring your animals inside and keep them with you. They depend on us to make the safe choices for them, especially when the weather turns ugly.
Stay safe, keep those four-legged family members close, and don’t underestimate a storm.
