Make sure your pets and livestock are current on their rabies vaccinations to help protect your animals, your family, and our community.
Unlike many other diseases, rabies is nearly always fatal once clinical signs appear. There is no reliable treatment once symptoms develop, which is why prevention is so important.
Rabies is zoonotic, meaning it can be transmitted from animals to people. While the chances of encountering a rabid animal are relatively low, they are never zero. In Indiana, bats, raccoons, skunks, and foxes can carry rabies and may expose our pets and livestock. Most wildlife is healthy and an important part of our ecosystem, but enjoy those critters from a safe distance and never handle an animal that appears sick, injured, or unusually friendly.
If your pet is bitten or has direct contact with a wild animal or with a domestic animal, whose rabies vaccination status is unknown, contact your veterinarian promptly for guidance.
