There comes a point where you have to take a step back.
For the past several years, C4 Kennels has worked incredibly hard to breed Cane Corsos the right way. We health test, educate our families, carefully screen homes, and breed only when we believe the timing and demand are right except for a couple accidents 😅. We have always stood behind every puppy we produce, and every dog born here will always have a home with us if life takes an unexpected turn.
But the reality is… this has become heartbreaking.
In the three years we’ve lived in our new home, we’ve had returned dogs in our house for all but about three months. As one dog prepares to leave, another is already on the way back.
What’s most frustrating is that these aren’t “bad” dogs.
Most of these dogs are exactly what a Cane Corso is supposed to be loyal, protective, intelligent, and deeply bonded to their family. They simply need continued structure, leadership, and commitment. Cane Corsos aren’t a breed you give up on because they become inconvenient.
People often ask why it’s so difficult to rehome an adult Cane Corso. The answer is simple: they are Velcro dogs. They devote themselves completely to their family. When they’re surrendered, they don’t just lose a house, they lose their people. They grieve. They become confused. Sometimes they develop behaviors they never had before because their entire world has been turned upside down.
I completely understand that life happens. Job loss, illness, divorce, and unforeseen circumstances can make keeping a dog impossible. I will never judge someone for circumstances beyond their control, and I will always honor my commitment to take one of my dogs back.
But what I cannot accept is when a healthy, well bred, well behaved Cane Corso is treated as disposable.
Every return affects more than just the dog. It impacts my family, my own dogs, and the emotional well-being of the dog coming back into a completely different environment.
Ironically, it’s often the families I spend the most time carefully vetting who end up returning their dogs. Meanwhile, some of the people I took a chance on or worked with through payment plans have become some of the most loyal owners and have given their dogs incredible lives.
After a lot of thought, we’ve made a difficult decision.
C4 Kennels will be taking a hiatus from breeding.
Our male isn’t old enough to breed yet anyway, so this is the right time to step back, regroup, and reevaluate where we go from here over the next year.
I simply cannot continue producing puppies when so many are finding their way back home. It isn’t fair to the breed. It isn’t fair to my family. And most importantly, it isn’t fair to the dogs.
To everyone who has trusted us, supported us, and given one of our dogs a forever home you are the reason we have continued this journey for as long as we have. Thank you for proving that responsible ownership still exists.
These dogs deserve forever. That’s what we’ve always believed, and that’s what we’ll continue to stand for.
