Time to meet the Ridgebacks!! 🔥 Say hello to Stormy & Harlow. ❤️🧡
This post is long overdue, but I’ve been thinking a lot about Rhodesian Ridgebacks since meeting these two. 🤭
Stormy has that perfect big, blocky male head. He has a powerful build and is the kind of handsome that makes people stop and stare when we’re on walks — that, and possibly scary dog privilege. ❤️ Miss Harlow is his sleek counterpart — slender, elegant, and effortlessly graceful in motion. 🧡 Together, they make it extremely tempting to fall in love with Ridgebacks in general.
True to their Ridgeback nature, both dogs are affectionate with their family while carrying an independent, thoughtful persona. ✨ They’re emotionally intelligent and sensitive, and they don’t tend to seek attention from strangers. Some people describe their aloofness as “serious.” They’re observant, and they can be protective without looking for trouble. 😌 Similar to other high energy breeds, they need a daily *strenuous* activity, or they become bored, anxious, and/or destructive. 😤
I have a LOT of work to do on myself before ever getting one because I’m coming from Labs and Goldens. 😂 Ridgebacks are less biddable and have higher prey drives. You must lead with CALM confidence and STRONG, consistent leadership if you’re going to properly raise them from puppyhood — or maintain a stable adult Ridgeback. 💯 They are not recommended for first time dog owners. ❌
I definitely won’t be rushing into the Ridgeback life anytime soon, although one day I think it’d be fun to buy a Honda Ridgeline and have a couple Ridgebacks. 😁🛻 For now, I’ll just enjoy Stormy & Harlow (I love their rowdy playtime even though it usually ends a little intensely) and the Ridgeback accounts I follow online. 🤠💕 Huge thanks to their family for introducing me to this amazing breed. 🔥 The Ridgeback community of humans is also a wonderful place to be. 🫶🏼
