This sweet dog was rescued alongside his owner after a propane refrigerator at their camp failed to vent properly, resulting in carbon monoxide poisoning. Both were affected, and when his owner realized something was wrong, he was unable to move and had to call for help.

While his owner was taken to the hospital, this brave pup came to us. We immediately started oxygen therapy and supportive care with IV fluids, and he stayed with us overnight for monitoring.

We’re happy to report that by the next day he was feeling much more like himself and continued to improve rapidly.

Carbon monoxide poisoning can be life threatening for both people and pets, but thanks to quick thinking, dedicated rescuers, and prompt medical care, this story has a happy ending.

We’re wishing both this good boy and his dad a full recovery and many more adventures together. ❤️🐾

This patient suffered a serious eye injury during a backyard golf practice session.

He normally loves helping his owner retrieve golf balls during backyard practice sessions. Unfortunately, this time he darted in front of the swing just as the club came through and was struck directly in the eye by a golf ball only about 10 feet off the tee.

Thankfully, his family acted quickly and brought him to us within 90 minutes. After carefully flushing the eye, we were able to suture the cornea. The eye refilled rapidly, and while he does not currently have vision in that eye, the globe appears normal externally, which is encouraging.

The next couple of weeks will be important as the inflammation decreases and we get a better understanding of any internal damage and his long-term outlook.

We’re hopeful for a smooth recovery and are grateful his family sought care so quickly. Prompt treatment can make a significant difference in cases like this.

Dr. Tim performing an ultrasound guided liver aspirate yesterday. Using ultrasound guidance allows us to safely and accurately collect tiny samples from the liver with minimal invasiveness, helping us diagnose and guide treatment for liver disease, inflammation, infection, cancer, and more.

This cat was diagnosed with hepatic lipidosis, or fatty liver disease.

Feline hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver disease) is a common, life-threatening condition in cats caused by prolonged lack of food. When a cat stops eating for several days, stored body fat overwhelms the liver. Immediate veterinary intervention—usually via a temporary feeding tube and supportive care—is essential for recovery.

This cat did get a esophageal feeding tube placed and after several feedings began to eat on his own with the tube still in place. That is always a great sign!!

It’s always amazing what we can learn from a few small samples and advanced imaging working together.

Some of you may remember Molly from her time with us before heading off to veterinary school in London! She’ll be back working with us for a brief stint this summer, and we’re so excited to have her around again.

It sounds like she has been having some incredible experiences already. While this school year has been very lecture heavy, she recently began her first clinical rotation at a veterinary clinic in London during spring break.

Outside of class, she spent part of her winter break dog and cat sitting for fellow students and even took a solo trip to Bruges, Belgium.

Before the school year began, she spent two weeks working on a dairy farm near Weymouth where she helped with pregnancy diagnosis, fed calves, and learned how the milking parlor operated. She also spent time working at a horse riding school and stable which, according to her, confirmed that horse medicine may not be the path for her 😅

We love seeing where veterinary medicine is taking her and can’t wait to have her back in Marquette this summer!

Found a tick on your pet? Here’s what to know about black legged ticks (also called deer ticks) and tick borne disease.

Diseases such as Lyme, Ehrlichia, and Anaplasma can be transmitted through the bite of a black legged tick. If you find a tick or a recent tick bite on your dog, there are a few different options depending on your pet and the situation:

• Start doxycycline for 3 weeks out of an abundance of caution
• Wait about a month and run a tick borne disease test, since it can take time for tests to turn positive
• Monitor closely for symptoms of illness

Signs of tick borne disease can include:
• Fever
• Decreased appetite
• Joint pain
• Stiffness or trouble walking

If you find a tick on your pet and are unsure what to do next, give us a call. And remember, prevention is always easier than treatment when it comes to ticks!
