Last week, Broman arrived at Bayshore Veterinary Hospital struggling to breathe. His body temperature had reached a dangerous 105.5°F, and severe swelling in the back of his throat was restricting his airway.
Our team quickly jumped into action! After stabilizing Broman, Dr. Hurley performed emergency airway surgery to help him breathe.
During surgery, she shortened and thinned his elongated soft palate, removed his enlarged tonsils, and widened his nostrils to improve airflow. However, significant swelling remained deep in his throat.
Using a medication called mannitol to help reduce the swelling, our team carefully worked to open his airway. After multiple treatments, the swelling had improved by approximately 90%!
Broman remained intubated for several hours following surgery before transitioning to our oxygen kennel, where our team closely monitored his breathing throughout recovery.
The best part? Broman was able to go home the very next day and is now living his best life!
We also want to take a moment to recognize Dr. Hurley, who has dedicated an incredible amount of time and effort to studying, training, and expanding her skills in airway surgeries. Her commitment to continuing her education and bringing these advanced procedures to our patients is something we're extremely proud of. Broman's story is a wonderful testament to that hard work and dedication. Being able to put those skills into action when a patient needs them most is exactly why that commitment matters.
