This horse has taught me a lot and is always really fun to trim. He's a great example of what we can achieve using postural alignment as a trimming guide rather than trying to make the feet look "correct". He's grown a full new hoof capsule since the top photo was taken and I'm very happy with how his new growth has come in, both much healthier and better aligned with his coffin bones.

This founder case had a major setback this winter, she rotated severely again and a large portion of her dorsal wall died off and separated at the coronary band on her worst hoof. She spent 6 months in a direct glue clog style leverage reduction package with DIM and casting. She also started on meds after testing positive for Cushings and did a stint on Ertugliflozin to get her insulin levels under control.

I recently was able to coordinate with her veterinarian and get pre and post trim radiographs as well as discuss her case in depth and make a plan going forward. She has been comfortable since February in the glue on clogs and will be going in a Versa grip style shoe now that she has grown significant sole depth.

I had to appreciate how this pre trim foot looked today. This is 2 years and 8 months of work on Brownie, consistent 5 week cycles. The new growth followed the old damage on this foot for a long time, her frog had been starved of blood flow and was incredibly atrophied. Now the soft tissue is recovering and we are actually making gains each cycle. But it can take a long time when they are this compromised.

Summer is burnout season for farriers. Between working in the heat, dealing with bugs and wildfire smoke, and horses really doing the most to destroy their own feet, it's a test of survival and sanity maintenance.

The pressure to preserve soundness with the odds stacked against us is real. It really is my most stressful time of year.

I have made an effort to appreciate and celebrate the little wins, like these horses standing square after their trims.

Or running into a young rider who leases my first founder rehab and hearing that they are jumping 2 feet and getting PRs at speed events.

Every time I see a post or story from a client out enjoying their horses in this fleeting summer season, I'm reminded of why I dedicated myself to this trade.

And I have made sure to prioritize riding my own horse this summer too 💜

I really appreciate everyone doing their part to help me work safely during the recent heat and fly hatches. The current air quality crisis is our next hurdle to jump through. I'm obviously not willing to let any horses go without care, while still doing what I can to preserve my health.

We don't know exactly how long this is going to last or if there will be reoccurances. I just ask that clients be prepared to be flexible with possible reschedules, and keep up the good work with fans, airflow and shade. It's also helpful if you let me know how conditions are in your area if I'm traveling some distance to you. I know many of you already do that and I so appreciate you!

Please also listen to your own bodies, take care of yourselves and be gentle with yourself and others. Let's use common sense and compassion and get through this together.

The value of radiographs, this donkey has had recurrent white line infections and bull nosing in all 4 feet but far worse on the left rear. We suspected he had a divergent angle of his P3 which the radiographs confirmed. These type of feet are harder to map because all of the external landmarks become distorted. Radiographs help us make the best trim decisions possible and can also confirm further down the line if progress is being made.

I have seen laminitic donkeys present this way more than once, this donkey was a rescue and presumably had "elf shoe" type overgrown feet at some point which rocked him back and now whenever he gets laminitic his negative angle gets worse. It is founder in reverse in my opinion (founder typically being a divergent angle where P3 rotates downward in a collapse of the front arch of the foot rather than the back of the foot collapsing like with this guy).
