Laura and I gave Georgia a bit of a spa day yesterday as the flies seem to LOVE her. 😒
We washed her legs, treated some bare spots on them with topical medication, and put some brand new fly boots on her. (Thank you for sending those from the wish list!)

We are noticing a correlation with donkeys who were previously on pasture, high sugar, starch, and corn diets, seem to be more prone to fly strike. The bugs seem to gravitate to them. Where animals who have been in our care for more than 6 months, and get practically none of those things, are hardly struggling with flies on their legs.

We have more health updates to share on our sweet girl Georgia soon as well, stay tuned!

Way to go Poppy!!

Poppy has decided that while it's scary to initially be "caught", she really likes whatever handling we do! She especially appreciates when I catch her to apply SWAT to her legs to keep those awful flies away.

She is showing less and less concern for being handled, even stepping sideways towards me for swat application! We've started working on leading outside of the makeshift catch chute to prepare her for moving to a paddock with more friends when she is ready.

Last year we were able to fit almost every single entry photo into the 2026 calendar. We have some pretty adorable entries so far already! 🤩

To enter your long ear into the contest it’s $15, and $1 per vote! All proceeds go to the care of the donkeys and mules at SYA.

We still need some mule faces, and maybe a hinny or two!

Georgia (left) and Cecelia (right) have become friends. These two gals are the elders of the donkey herd and are the only two jennets, they seem to enjoy each other’s company. I wonder what stories they tell each other.

We want to see your photos of long ears doing long ear things. Working, playing, hanging out in the sun, rolling in the dirt, or just smiling for the camera, it's time to let your long ear shine!
(Entries do not have to be SYA alumni.) We welcome all long ears including donkeys, mules, and hinnies. If other animals are in the picture that is ok, but NO humans please.

Prizes
The top 12 photos, as voted by our community, will earn a spot in our 2027 calendar and receive a complimentary copy of the 2027 calendar.

1ST PLACE: Star of the show! The photo with the most votes will get to choose the month they would like their winning photo to be featured on, and will receive TWO SYA calendars, and one item of their choice from the SYA shop. If the photo is horizontal as requested in the rules, the winner also has the option for their photo to be on the cover of the calendar! 🤩

2ND PLACE: The runner up photo with the second most votes will get to choose the next month of their choosing, and will also receive a free calendar!

3RD PLACE: Gets to choose the next desired month for their photo to be featured on, and will receive two SYA bumper stickers of their choosing.

Georgia exploring the wooded pasture during golden hour. ✨ There’s something so special about donkeys. I really could watch them all day.

The wooded pasture has been so fun. Most of it is a pretty steep hill, but the donkeys take to it like mountain goats and have carved their own narrow foot paths all throughout the hillside.
