Alright, pencil it in, folks, the 15th of every month is now a photo op extravaganza because we're going to pick a pic from a category we'll reveal at the start of each month and swap out our page banner to feature the winner. The person whose pic gets picked will score a $20.00 gift card to our store or store credit, because who doesn't love free stuff. For February, get creative and show us your most epic planted aquarium setup - and don't even think about trying to pass off someone else's masterpiece as yours, we want to see your own genius.

Keeping koi fish is like tending a living painting that occasionally begs for snacks. They glide through the water in slow, deliberate brushstrokes—little orange, white, and gold thoughts drifting under the surface. Some days they’re mysterious and serene; other days they splash like toddlers at bath time. You feed them, name them, swear they recognize you (they totally do), and somehow find yourself standing by the pond longer than planned, convinced everything in life can wait until the koi finish their laps.

🌿 Winter Pond Tip: Dealing with String Algae ❄️

Noticing stringy, hair-like algae in your pond during the winter months? You’re not alone—and the good news is, it’s normal!

Why it happens:
Cold water is often clearer, allowing more sunlight to reach the bottom of the pond. Combined with leftover nutrients from fall, this creates the perfect environment for string algae to grow—even in winter.

What you SHOULD do:
✅ Manually remove algae with a net or rake
✅ Remove leaves and debris before they decompose
✅ Keep some water movement if weather allows
✅ Use cold-water beneficial bacteria

Pro Tip:
Winter string algae is mostly cosmetic. A little maintenance now makes spring pond care much easier!
