If your dog rushes out the door, sit‑and‑wait might actually add frustration instead of helping. For some dogs, the missing piece isn’t obedience — it’s arousal regulation. Getting a little excited with a toy and then settling teaches the nervous system how to rise and come back down.

It’s not a fix, but working on arousal out of context can support the foundation your dog needs before impulse control at the door.

If your dog has big feelings about meeting new people and you don’t have guests over, start with one safe new thing a day. A towel over the food bowl, a different dish, a new object on the floor — small, anticlimactic novelty can help take a little edge off and keep things from feeling so intense.

It’s not a fix, just a way to support flexibility for those unexpected encounters.

Quick reminder for anyone working with a dog who has big, loud feelings about people or other dogs. Around the five‑week mark, things often look great — but the skill isn’t generalized yet.

If you’re thinking about removing the muzzle, dropping a barrier, or letting the trigger come closer, pause and get confirmation first. Most dogs still need more variables built into the foundation.
